Blender China wiki

3

Blender Chinar screenieWhile the Blender Wiki is getting more and more translations, the Chinese Blender community has been steadily working on their own translation. On the Docboard maillist they commented that they needed their own installation because internet access is restricted in China and not everyone can reach the Blender site. In time, they will port their content to the main Wiki though. You seem to have to log in to see the actual content, but just looking at the table of contents makes me happy :-)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Very cool indeed. What is interesting is that it doesn't seem too problematic to get onto their site, while they can't get out? Of course, I'm talking without knowing the specifics, but it is still interesting to think about.

  2. I'm not sure how this works. When I was in China last year I didn't notice any problems connecting to the outside world. Since then, the Chinese government has been restricting internet acccess for many websites. I don't know how this relates to traffic from the rest of the world into China. Presumably, all the Chinese websites are government-approved and they shouldn't have a problem when non-Chinese people see them, right?

ISP in china must install some software or hardware to guarantee people can't connect the "bad" site. But we can also use proxy to reach the site which we want go. lately the freebsd.org was be banned.and the wikipedia.org. now,we can open freebsd.org's page again.
