VisionBin – Share your (Blender) art online
VisionBin is a free online service to publish and share your work, created by Dion Moult of the ‘Official’ Blender Model Repository. A nice tool by a Blender user for other Blender users.

On one of the site, i got a trojan virus warning message.
Thomas, it’s because of 3rd party ads, Dion is fixing, or maybe has already fixed the problem.

And why are their photographs? I thought it was for Blender artwork…
@ruhroh: it’s a nice tool by a blender user that can be used by other blender users, but I think Dions press release makes it pretty clear they have a broader focus

Yes, CorsairX is right on what I’m aiming for. Of course, since it’s still in beta, you guys can tell me what you like, what you don’t like, what changes you want, any features you think are missing, and I’ll happily make changes! This way you can make sure it’s works how you want it to.
Photography is there because it isn’t limited to Blender artwork. If you want you can even put up sound, text, or video.
I personally believe that sites like DeviantArt got it wrong. For them, you can create a portfolio which is simply an image gallery hosted on their website. I hope I can make it so that you can create a portfolio that really looks as though it is _your_ creation, _your_ personal space, and you have the freedom to showcase it as you want.

Can we upload things made in other 3D packages?
navigation needs improvement.
for example, when you first come to the site, there is very little information about any content. you only get “view examples” that leads to you projects and works.. so maybe, there could be a button to browse projects and users..
and there could be a list that shows up recently updated and new projects/works.
also, when you click “view examples” you get a random and latest lists, which is nice.. also most popular list is good. i just don’t understand why this is under “view examples” button. but, what happens if there is a project that is not popular or new? how does user find those?
and, when viewing a project, you don’t really go into “project page”. it’s just a general information, but there is no navigation links related to the project. things like “members” “releases” .. etc. so could be nice to have an actual project page, with additional links on the side/top that are always there to get you around the different areas of the project.
now on top you only have “home” “about” “my account”. which are not that helpful.. but ofcourse good to have too.
hmh, so to sum it up.. general feeling i got when i first got on to the site “empty, where is everything?” and then after i found some images, it wasn’t clear who made them, what was used to create them.. and i sort of got lost not knowing where in the site i am. is this a project, or just random image.
maybe i create an account to see it’s full functionality.

ok, created account and played around a bit more. it works better when you are logged in, naturally. but still, lot of “dead ends”..
for example when you upload picture, you end up into page saying thanks, but instead maybe you could end up back into managing files, or go straight to your portfolio to view the uploaded work. so maybe it’s just me, but it just bothers me when websites do this.. after action, there is just message, but then you have to go through main navigation links to get back to where you were, especially when you are uploading stuff, you are afraid to press back-button because everything could explode :)
also, “my profile” could hold information of latest uploaded works etc.. links straight to them. now it’s all split into several “my” sections, which is a bit confusing.
… yupyup, i go back play some more, maybe i can make up some friends even .. heh.

Good idea. Could it have spaces allowed in logins?
It looks not professional enough.
Very important is to increase to quality of the models, else no one will ever use this site for professional use.
It’s also very important to hide all the useless information on the site such as google ads and other publicity !
Lastly is it’s absolute important to give the site a professional design, or would you ever buy a car designed by untalented amateur ? ;-)

The most important thing will be to get rid of (or not use at all) those pesky trojan/virus laden ads – which apparently have popped up AGAIN recently on the Model Repository site. I’ve now given up on that site for good – I simply don’t see why my willingless to share my models should be repaid with the possibility of a trojan or virus. If the same advertising provider is used on VisionBin then it’ll quickly die a death from mistrust.

When I got there tho, I was pretty off by the site leading with google ads on a generic template. When you put more effort into your revenue than communicating the content of the site then to me it appears your first priority is revenue streams, asking for something from the community before you’ve offered them anything. It looks like every page that appears when you enter an incorrect URL and are spammed by domain squatters.
While you say that the DeviantArt crew get it wrong, they do lead with the art first, and they do seem to offer something more concrete on first inspection (which is what you’ll get from most visitors, a quick inspection).

Vision Bin is a really cool site. Its bound to get even better with time as well. Its nice to see it featured here on Blender Nation.
