Keron Dillon’s BlenderNewbies is a goldmine for everyone who is learning Blender or who is aiming to improve his skills further. His most recent videotutorial is called ‘Super Time-Saving Tips’.

You can download two versions of the tutorial: a single large download (98MB) and a download in two smaller parts. Some people seem to have problems unzipping the latter, so I recommend you download the full version.

Can’t download it, it just keeps stalling after a few megabytes. There’s a sharp comment posted about hosting large files on a host that can’t cope with them, and although the tone is a bit sharp I can’t help agreeing.
@everyone: I checked with Kernon yesterday and he assured me that he had enough bandwidth to handle a BlenderNation post. Appearantly not.. I can’t help you with this now, but hopefully Kernon will be around later today to look into this..
I found this tutorial last week and it’s very well done. A lot of the stuff I knew already, but the things that I didn’t have already become a part of my Blender workflow. All Blender Users from newbies to pros should be very grateful for this awesome video.

If you’re having problems downloading, I need more info. I don’t think it’s my hosting service because I use one of the best services available and I’m no where near my monthly bandwidth (1000GB). Also, the video has been downloaded many, many times (over 2,000) with only two or three people mentioning a problem. So, it’s quite possible that there may be some issue on your end.
-What OS are your using?
-Dialup or Broadband?
-Are there any limitations imposed by your service provider?
-Is there a timeout issue with your system or ISP?
-How are you downloading (browser, download managing software?, etc.)
-Is there an issue with your firewall, antivirus, etc.?
-What other applications are runing that may be effecting the download?
-Is there an issue with HD space?
Great tutorial – but he is moving around with the cursor to much.
If you’re using dialup, you will always have a problem with larger files unless you use a download manager such as GetRight, NetTransport, etc. Also, the built-in download manager in Firefox may not be good enough. You really need to have dedicated software for something like that. I believe GetRight and NetTransport are still free. If not, I’m sure there are plenty others.
With good managing software, you can always resume the download.

Seams they ran out of bandwidth or something I get all times ‘Service Temporarily Unavailable’. I’m really intrested how you can speed up things when using blender and creating things. Can someone put it on youtube or something. :)
Please, don’t create a torrent of my videos. I would prefer that people learn how to download large files (maybe I should do a tutorial on what software to use, how to deal with common issues, etc.).
Again, over 2,300 downloads have been made of this file since October 28th. I do not have a bandwidth problem.

I just downloaded my files with no problems.
Also, note that there are two ways to download the video: the one larger file and the two smaller files that need to be rejoined after downloading (your zip application should automatically handle the joining process, just be sure to open the file with the .001 extension).

Okay, here’s the deal:
I just spent about 30 minutes on the phone with my hosting tech support. They have assured me that there are absolutely no problems whatsoever with the site, its bandwidth, and the downloading of the file. They put me on-hold several times and ran all sorts of tests and checked all sorts of stats and, even downloaded the file from two separate computers connecting to the site via a standard internet connection.
I was prepared to upgrade my hosting account if there was actually a problem but, they assured me that they don’t see a reason to do that at this time. In other words, they turned down an opportunity to generate more money. That assures me even more that there isn’t a problem on my end.
I’m very sorry that SOME have had a problem. I don’t make these tutorials so people can’t actually view them. Also, I think there should be a clarification of the “we” that are having a problem. Out of over 2,300 downloads, and climbing, I’ve only received 11 unique complaints about the file…that’s less than one-half of one percent…
Between tech support and myself, the only reasons we could come up with to explain the few that are experiencing problems are:
– common internet congestion issues (a downloading file rarely will get to you directly, it must go through several other nodes on the internet)
– a browser issue
– downloading software in use
– limitations of the downloaders service provider
I sincerely hope that all who are interested in my videos are able to successfully download and view them and, learn from them. If you’re having problems now, please try again because the vast majority of people are able to download with no problems.

I still cannot download the files. (Tried 4 times) Neither the single archive nor the split version. After 1 or 2 megabytes Firefox / Star Downloader stops and says ‘Could not connect to host’.
So, please can anybody set up a bittorren tracker? Where’s the problem with that??

OK, got it! The first time I dl’ed it went AWOL after 6,7 Megs. But thanks to the very flexible way that Opera (the best there is!) handles downloads it arrived the second time with no problems!

An pdf (or annother text format) would be nice for us not so complete beginners who don’t want to spend 30 minutes watching a video of stuff that we already know the majority of.

LOL Of course! As the fact that you made this tut shows, you are a teacher at heart, so naturally you would like to teach people to do things the right way! That’s me, totally. However, I have learned that us teacher types get more done when paired with the “just get it done somehow” types. They go ahead and start doing something, and we have to get them out of the hard places where they get stuck! My brother used to horrify me in his coding when we’d make games in QbASIC, and I’d go back and rewrite it OO style and with future compatibility and good variable names. But together, we got a lot more accomplished than either one could do.
All this to say, why don’t you post a little tut on downloading tuts :), but go ahead and let the torrents come for those who just want it somehow. That’s the best way. you won’t be able to change people’s basic personality, and you don’t even really want to, cuz these types are great for getting things “done”. When the day comes that they don’t have the torrent option, they’ll have to figure out a new way, and they will.
By the way, I just downloaded it with IE7 on DSL, it stopped several times and I had to cancel and restart, but since IE resumes where you left off, there was no problem

Well, a torrent would drive traffic from my site and that would defeat the purpose. With no traffic, the site disappears. Someone will probably do it anyway so, what can you do? Time will tell.
I’m in the process of re-rendering the video at a lower resolution (640×480 from 800×600) and lowering the audio specs. Maybe that will help those that are having problems. There have been many downloads and the ratio of downloads to those having problems is such that I really can’t spend anymore time on this issue after the re-rendering.
BTW, tech support mentioned that IE7 has known issues with downloading files so, I’m glad you were able to eventually get it. Enjoy.
I would really suggest using dedicated download management software that performs CRC checks to ensure no corruption of the download. The file is fine.

Anyway, that’s fine for this one. It will probably look and sound like crap as most google videos do but, if that’s the only way that some (less than 1%) are able to view it then, I guess it’s worth a try. If someone wants to YouTube it that will be okay, also.
However, I would like to stress that I would prefer that the other videos don’t find their way to these sites as well. I can’t stress enough the fact that having the website would become a waste of time (and money) for me if people just end up going to google or youtube for my videos.
I do appreciate the interest in my efforts so, I’m willing to give that a try.

I have DownThemAll, Firefox 2.0, IE6, and I’m on a university line and I got a “server error” after 4MB in DownThemAll and a server error before I could even start in IE.
As a personal viewpoint, torrent files do not detract traffic or page hits. They detract bandwidth exclusively. If you had a link to a torrent on your page, wouldn’t I need to be on your page to get the torrent in the first place? It’s like a safety net for when your server has a problem — oops I guess I should say when us SOME people have a problem.
And when you really think about it, aren’t torrent clients a lot like really fancy download managers? Yes they are.

With a torrent file, you don’t have to visit the source website to get the link. You can do a torrent search for “Elephants Dream” and download it without going to the Elephants Dream site.
Seriously, it is stopping for some people. Think about it man, if you are dealing with people who’ve learned how to use blender more or less over the internet, don’t you think they know how to download a 100mb file via a link?
There is some conncetion issue because its stopped for me too. I mean, what else can we do but click on it? *shrug*

Kernon I am reading your posts here and you make it sound like 1% of idiots are having problems downolading your files. I spend over 30 minutes trying to downolad your file with konqueror, firefox, wget all with different computers from different ip addresses.
I have finally downloaded the file to find that it does not extract. It tells me it is corrupt.
I tried it on Windows, KUbuntu, and Fedora all failed
I give. I tried it on my mandriva server and it stalled. I do appreciate the effort but I cannot seem to get this file.

I know that. But, do I dismiss the fact that most people seem to be downloading with no problems? With the amount of traffic generated I would expect more than 15-20 complaints. Also note the posts, here, of people downloading with no problems.
I don’t know what to say other than I’ve been on the phone twice with tech support to confirm the bandwidth issue and both times they’ve not seen a problem. And, the file isn’t corrupt.
I guess my only solution is to not do anymore video tutorials. I’m going to reboot my whole way of thinking on the subject of tutorials. I’ll still do tutorials but, I’m going to find a creative way to combine text (HTML) with tiny video snippets of only the parts that need more clarification. I don’t know what else to do. I know that most people in this community know how to download large files (that was just a joke earlier).
It would be nice to get some feedback from those who have been able to download it instead of a stream of mostly complaints. There have been plenty of successful downloads.
I guess it’s all a good sign because, if people weren’t really interested then why would they bother so, I’m grateful. It’s just beginning to be pain in the @#!$!!#@$$.

I may rework all of the tutorials to “the new format” (whatever that means). Some good will come out of this “problem” (I’m still not totally convinced, I’ll have to wait for all the stats to really see what’s going on).
I think what’s really needed is “The Ultimate How-To on Creating the Smallest Video Files with the Best Quality and the Most Compatibility without All of The Techno-Geek Terms and Unexplained Parameters…Guide”. Any takers…
You could create avi files and use avi2swf to create flash videos or use ffmpeg to create flv files.

LOL! I don’t think I’ll be using the F____ format. I agree, it’s a great way to go but, so many people seem to break out in hives at the mere mention of _______. I would love to go that route, in fact, that was my original plan. I did a poll to see what people wanted, since they’re the ones that have to use the files, and the F____ format was dead last.
Could have been dead last but it works. It would be better than the flood of people not able to view the file.
I just downloaded other tutorials of yours with no problem. I am watching the one on screens right now. It just seems to be the one file that will not download. I do notice that the download starts at very high speeds and then just dies. The screens video was a consistant 160kbs or so.
I would have to think that the ISP has a throttle on the file some how.

If you load it up to you tube and restrict its public access, you can then stick a you tube window on your home page and have it play from there (rather than the YT home page). It still means a down load and of course YT kills the quality but its the superlative commentary that counts! ;)

Using DownloadThemAll and a lot of patience and brute force…
timesavers split1: 50.00/50.00mb (yay!)
timesavers split2: 48.94/48.94mb (yay!)
timesavers large: 14.75/98.94mb (on my 6th try..)
The split files once they were finally done said I had a bad zip header. oh well.
I tried downloading other videos off of the site and got similar results. While the downloads are going, I’ve gotten upwards of 851Kbps for about 30 seconds and then it drops off to zero, then it times out, and then every try after that for another 5 minutes says “Unavailable.” Other videos did generally perform better but I’m guessing its because they weren’t as large as this one.
I asked a professional server guru friend of mine that hosts neoservers.com for my own site and we looked up your info to try and figure out what’s going on. We deducted that GoDaddy is throttling your site. If you continue to ask them if there is a problem (and this assumption is true) they will continue to say that “nothing is wrong.”
You can avoid this sort of speed capping with torrents. ;) *wink nudge* and by the way, this site is really nice. Thanks Bart for linking us in the first place. :D I can’t wait to watch the video! You’ve got a sweet voice.
I could not download this with Firefox 1.5 / Linux FC5. It would stop after 3-6 mb then finally timeout and quit. Manu retries and cache clears. I have not had this problem with much larger files anywhere else but … obviously something is amiss.
Switched to using wget (wget -c http://…..) and the file came down perfectly. You don’t really need the -c option, but you will if you need to restart the download.
I could debug the TCP connection (I do that sort of thing for a living) but I would rather watch the video :-))

I had exactly the same problem as Scott — time out and quit with a retry clearing the cache. wget didn’t work for me however. I would be willing to host the file if you wish — people haven’t had problems with it and it’s been up for a couple of years.

Maybe some of the people who are getting corrupted downloads have some bad memory. I know that my last PC had problems downloading large files and then later I did a memory check and found that I had some bad RAM. Swapping it out with new memory fixed the problem.
That would be a lot of people with bad RAM

I know a few to add that relate to the ones you present; In addition to the Ctrl-L you can also hover over a point and press a plain L. This also selects linked verticies but instead of the selection it uses the point you hover over. And for the W menu (and all others afaik) you can select any of the first 9 options by pressing a number key. W1 subdivides, W6 removes doubles etc.

Like Kernon is saying, the problem is VERY unlikely at his end due to the numbers of people that are experiencing completed downloads.
The TCP/IP stack on most O/S’s these days is not very good at recovering from throttling and from packet loss. The stack on Linux O/S’s is a little better than the current Windows O/S’s, but not perfect.
The TCP stack contains a back-off algorithm which in the event of network congestion, will reduce window size of the amount of data it can receive/transmit. It also contains an algorithm to control retransmissions which also can exacerbate a congestion problem.
If you use large size (1500 byte) pings (which uses ICMP, not TCP), you will receive much better throughput (over a congested or throttled link) than you will if you use a TCP-based application. Some people use this type of test to try and simulate a large file download as all large file downloads should be using large frames (at least 1514 bytes – some links can handle jumbo frames i.e., larger than 1514 bytes). A test like this demonstrates that the current TCP implementations are not very good at recovering from congestion or link throttling.
There are a number of tools that can be used to determine where on the Internet a problem exists. And another thing that is necessary is that you must obtain a trace of the entire end-to-end path in BOTH directions: A traceroute from one end will not show the return path the packets take. You need to know the path in both directions to determine exactly where the congestion is.

I haven’t downloaded this file yet, but I did want to comment on a couple of things. First of all, while GoDaddy is a big company, I’ve heard a lot of bad things about them too. Like just now I looked at a review site and people rated them 2 1/2 stars out of 5. I wouldn’t entirely trust what the tech support says, though it sounds like they were being nice at least.
For sending a file to someone else for mirroring, I’d recommend YouSendIt. It lets you upload up to a 1gig file and it then e-mails the link to the person you’re sending to (since it is geared toward sending the file to one person, it only allows 3 downloads of the file for a span of 7 days).
I also just want to clear up what seems to be a confusion on how Bittorrent works. It isn’t actually a big file-sharing network like Napster was or things like Bearshare. In reality, there’s many separate trackers online which keep track of attached files. It could be a public tracker that allows anyone to upload or download, a private 3rd party site, or you can set up your own. Something like Pirate Bay is just a large public tracker.
So, using bitorrent doesn’t mean that anyone can just search and d/l it. You could actually set up a small tracker on your website to distribute files (there’s some small open source ones geared toward this type of thing). Things like Blog Torrent or Broadcast Machine (BMachine actually works like a video blog system):

Still, since the Blender community isn’t super-huge and people seem willing to mirror the files, that might be the easiest solution for you. While having a textual/pic guide with some limit videos is a possible option (and has some advantages in terms of updating data later), having a video showing everything is also a very nice thing, especially for very visual learners. It could even be a DVD some day.
I’d consider looking into other hosting places. Even if the bandwidth limit isn’t quite so high as GoDaddy, it’d probably be more consistant and mirrors could take up the slack.
Also, how sure are we that the majority of people actually did get complete copies of the file? Usually hits just record that someone started to download. Was it the tech support that said what percentage completed entirely? Unhappy people are usually more vocal, but it does seem suspicious to me that so many people posting seem to have had trouble if it did indeed have that many successful downloads.
So, thanks for all the effort put into the video and don’t give up yet. :)

previous attempts stalled in trying to get the large file.
no problem downloading the 2 smaller files but despite my best efforts
I gave up trying to extract the contents – it would not join the split file

As you can see latency really picks up in going from Shawcable in New York (hop 10) to Interoute (hop 12) also in New York.
This latency does not affect my transfers (other than slow them down). There doesn’t appear to be any packet loss (which is why my transfers don’t fail).
The people that are having problems will no doubt traverse a different path than this. I would be interested in seeing a traceroute from one of these people.
For those who are unfamiliar with doing traceroutes:

please stop posting these ping times and analyses/complaints about the downloads. This post is about a cool videotutorial, not about network problems. I’m sure Kernon will get things sorted out.
I hope he’ll still be motivated enough to put this much time in another videotutorial again!

I think it should be up to Kernon whether he wishes anyone to post on HIS website or not?
He may think that what we are doing is useful. On the other hand he may not. But it is still up to him to decide.

I truly hope all the downloading problems are solved soon because this sight and these video are some of the best I believe are available anywhere with both the depth of insight and breath of presentation. They just look like a million bucks!
I say this because in a chandelier I’m the one most would see as dim, and the video’s are truly wonderful for anyone proud to be thought of as a newbie in the Blender Community that (I hope) all newbies are happy to be a part of.
And by the way, all his video seem to download like gang-busters for me! (HP Pavilion, Windows XP SP3, AMD Turion 64)

is this a DivX file? its logo popped up when I tried the first couple of frames.

hello i downloaded bittorrent When i open and try to connect it say something about firewall setting I created a bittorren port and put ther 9000 like it says when i open but nothing happen it stil give me when i closed and open again the same message about port settings What to do. I have cable modem 512/128 Thank you
