suzannesmask.png3toedSloth posted about a neat technique for using using vertex painting to blend textures in the node editor. After reading the entirety of the thread it seemed that some people were having trouble getting it to work. So I did a quick video of the vertex paint technique that's mentioned in the thread as well as a technique similar that involves texture painting using UV mapping.

These are probably in the realm of a beginner level tutorial, but more like "begintermediate" when you consider what's involved, and I am assuming you understand nodes. I'm sure there are some other great ways of doing this, so if you know of any, point us to them!

And of course, they are in the CamStudio made avi using the XviD codec, which Windows (with the codec) or VLC should be able to play.

    Cool, I will watch it once I get back from my grandparents house.

    The UV mapping method gives IMHO better results.

    Two questions/suggestions:
    1) Why don't you use Texture Paint mode and paint directly on the object?
    2) You don't need a premade image, simply use "Image ->New" in the UV Editor to get a blank image.

    Thanks for the video tutorials!

    @SoylentGreen
    Your're right about both. It was really late when I was making these, and I just wasn't thinking. I re-made it this morning.

    First thought… uv mapping doesn't let you use procedural textures…
    I think are for different purposes, not only different solutions for the same work.

    You only have to use UV's for the mask – the materials that are mixed can be anything.

    Nice tutorial. I hadn't thought of that. I guess there is not a 16 material limit with this method.

    oh great – another texturing news item, I really appreciate it cause I'm rubbish at texturing, thanks -epat. :)

    This is not anything brand new, this has been already publisehd as releas note http://blender.org/cms/Blender_Material_Nodes.743.0.html

    But to blend three materials THAT IS REALY CHALENGE :-)

    maybe not new indeed but good to point it out anyway.
    he is more explaining the workflow than the mixing node itself.

    i am very impressed with the new node system. it pushes blenders possebilities somuch more further!

    Thanks for the helpfull tutorials.

    Would it be okay to put your video tutorials on Google?

  10. 10 Nahum

    Is it just me or can't yafray work with those node materials stuff ?

  11. 11 QEDqubit

    it's a bit of a 'monkey see-monkey dooh' tutorial.
    i have to watch it in slo-mo because you add those shader thingies so fast without explaning what they are/do (and i'm really looking for such a tutorial) i can hardly see what connects where, let alone understand why.
    I wish GREYBEARD would make some new tutorials.
    BUT ! monkeyCmonkeyDo tut's are really fast, and fooling around after seeing this has taught me new things to do
    so THANKS aLOT ! i've made some funny still's

    by the way, has the node editor feature, and DTPblender's layering feature made blender better than photoshop ?
    (in layerblending stuff?)

    @LOGAN
    Sure!

    @QEDqubit
    I thought I was moving kind of fast, but I didn't know how detailed I should have done this. So are you having issues understanding the nodes? I kind of assumed an understanding of nodes. I tried to do a video on nodes, but it was running crazy long. I tried to write it all out here: http://www.geneome.net/blender/writtentutorials/matnodes.html but I haven't told anyone about it since I'm not really sure how good it is.

  13. 13 Eugene (etr9j)

    @Nahum
    That's right. As of now, the nodes only work with the Blender Internal. But I think that might change with proposed changes to Blender later on.

    @all
    Okay, I felt bad for not going into the texture painting more, so I have done an "extended edition" which I hope helps a little more. I really would like these to be helpful to as many people as possible and your comments are very much appreciated.

    @QEDqubit
    Tell me if this is better!

    woops !
    my apologies for not reacting faster, just got home reading my mail,
    so i still have to (eagerly) read what you are linking to,
    thanx in advance for your swift response & giving even more expertise, because (the magic of mapping really lies in knowing what to do(yippee!)
    um gonna read it right away !

    Cool man! Thanks so much for putting these together. Thought I recognized the voice– I was the guy at SIGGRAPH talking about povray. Thanks.
