Ton, Sacha Live on Dutch TV Tonight
Tonight at 7:30pm on NL3, Ton and Sacha will be interviewed in the popular Dutch TV program ‘De wereld draait door‘. I’ll upload the interview to dotSUB tomorrow so we can have it properly subtitled for all non-Dutch speakers.
Oh, and I see that ‘The Big Lebowski’ will be on at 8.30pm – it’s gonna be a great TV night :)

Would be the first time that I will turn on the tele for that boring television show and pretend to be an ‘intellectual human’. Note all the ‘happy faces’ in the audience and the most irritating high voice of one of the hosts btw. Besides that, it will be good for blender. Good luck Ton and Sago!

Yeah, Giel wasn’t very positive about the grass. In the Parool Ton admitted though that the grass at the start of the movie is very static (one of the complaints by Giel), while at the end it’s better.
For the people who didn’t see it: A small part of BBB was shown (the three rodents attacking the bunny) as well as the making of part of that clip. Ton and Sacha explained a bit about the concept and told it wasn’t just gratis, but free as well. I think they did pretty well, considering the short time they got (that’s characteristic of the show, a lot of short interviews).
Very good speaking by sacha and ton.
Little to short because the interview about the Hilary or Obahma contest election was to long (40 minutes in a 1 hour television program!).
Grass was looking very good Giel needs new glasses.

Great to see a major televisionprogram did an item on it. It was quite a surprise to see Ton and Sacha on tv when i was watching the show.
The problem now is i have eseen the trailer (30 seconds of film) and i have seen a preview on DWDD. So now i have seen about one minute thirty of the movie. So that means there’s only eight minutes left for me to see.
NO MORE SHOWING OF THE MOVIE!!! STOP IT!!!

Saw the interview tonight, a little short, but for a mainstream TV program being watched by public who may never have heard of Blender, it couldn’t be a better way to promote it!
The Het Parool article was very complimentary, talking about how amazing the animation was when you compare it to Pixar (!) movies, although the grass is getting more publicity than the script at the moment!

It’s funny how many English people confuse Dutch with German by the way. As a native speaking Dutchie, I think German has a very different “tone” and doesn’t sound much like Dutch at all.

As for the Ton en Sago adventure in DWDD, I liked it! I could even understand what Ton said. Usually he’s got this weird way of talking, but he was quite clear now. Please do continue like that, it was much better now that I could finally understand the words of the mr. Blender himself :)
That toilet guy, I believe his name was Sa-go, was quite funny too!

I watch DWDD nearly every day and was surprised to see Ton and Sasha there! It was a good interview, and they managed to make the point about free vs. gratis in a clear way. It was also nice to see Giel Beelen “get it” (while the show host constantly came back to the gratis part, and clearly didn’t understand anything about the licensing) and mention Linux as well.
In terms of coverage, you cannot do much better than DWDD in the Netherlands. As a Blender hobbyist and Free Software enthusiast, I’m painfully aware that the majority doesn’t even know of the existence of the movement, and any good coverage in traditional media (on prime time to boot!) is welcome. And this was *great* coverage.
Here’s a quick transscript in Dutch, I’m sure there’s someone else willing to translate it to English?

Sacha, we hebben heel veel animatiefilms gezien over dieren, dit is er ook weer een.. Ice Age, Shrek.. Waarom nu weer?
– Sacha:
Ja, het stikt er van he?
Nou, dat komt eigenlijk door dat programma, Blender, dat moest zich ontwikkelen, en een van de eisen voor de film was dat we een goede fur rendering hadden. Dus dat we vacht hadden.
– Presentator:
“Fur?”
– Sacha:
“Fur”, vacht zeg maar.
Dat moest zich ontwikkelen tijdens het maken van die film, en daarom was dat een van de eisen.
– Presentator:
Dus het moest iets met een vacht zijn?
– Sacha:
Ja. Kijk het technische aspect, is misschien meer voor jou (kijkt Ton aan) dat is gewoon heel interessant om dat te ontwikkelen.
– Presentator:
Laten we eerst even kijken of het gelukt is.
*stukje van Big Buck Bunny, waarin Buck noten naar zijn hoofd krijgt gegooid*
– Publiek: *lacht*
– Presentator:
Ja, dit konijn is ehm.. de sneue hoofdrolspeler zien we hier in dit stukje *lacht*
Ton, jullie maken dus voor 150.000 euro, een schijntje, een, een.. ja, bijna een Hollywoodproductie, want zo ziet het er gewoon uit, hoe kan dat?
– Ton:
Nou, het belang van deze film is niet zozeer het gratis weggeven. Ik noem het liever een ‘vrije film’. De film heeft als bedoeling dat we het maken om de techniek te ontwikkelen, en daarvoor hebben we enkele duizenden mensen op internet ons geld gegeven door de DVD in de voorverkoop te zetten. Negen maanden geleden kon je de DVD al krijgen van de film.
– Presentator:
Oke.
– Ton:
En door de film te maken testen we het programma Blender. Dat is een van de belangrijke dingen. Het andere ding is dat we de film ook helemaal open hebben geven aan mensen om er verder aan te ontwikkelen. Dus alle techniek van de film, maar ook alle creatieve bestanden, de tekeningen, de storyboards, het hele verhaal, wordt allemaal gepubliceerd eind van de volgende maand, op het internet, voor de mensen om naar te kijken, van te leren, en om verder te gebruiken.
– Presentator:
Hoe nieuw is dit, Sacha?
Het is heel anders dan Hollywood het doet natuurlijk.
– Sacha:
Ton heeft het al een keer gedaan, met een open film. Dit is zeg maar de tweede keer. Maar dit is de eerste keer vanuit het Blender Instituut. De eerste film was met mensfiguren en het verhaal was een beetje Arty Farty…
– Presentator:
*Wat* was het?! *lacht*
– Sacha:
“Arty Farty”, beetje een kunstzinnig verhaal. Ik mag daar natuurlijk niet teveel over zeggen want het is natuurlijk ook zijn film geweest (kijkt lachend richting Ton).
– Presentator:
Maar, ik wil het even goed begrijpen, kan jij het volgen Giel? Jij wel? Jij bent beter met computers dan ik denk ik..
– Giel:
Ja nee, ja ik snap het wel, alleen wat ik niet begrijp: die vacht, dat vind ik er best ingewikkeld en mooi uit zien. Maar dan zie ik dat gras hier.. Dat is gewoon niet echt mooi, het beweegt niet eens! Normaal gesproken bewegen de graspuntjes toch?
– Ton:
Tja, degene die dat gras gemaakt heeft kan jou nu wel wurgen waarschijnlijk *lacht*
– Giel:
Dit is echt heel mooi gras juist?
– Sacha:
Dat is mijn afdeling niet dus daar maak ik me niet zo heel druk over *lacht*
– Presentator:
Maar het gaat dus zo, het is dus een soort internet community, die met z’n allen iets inbrengen in die film, zo moet je het zien??
– Sacha:
Ehm, nee, niet echt. Er is een team samengesteld, van over de hele wereld, vanuit die Blender community.
– Presentator:
Die kunnen daar allemaal op?
– Sacha:
Ehm, er is een team van zeven man samengesteld. Die hebben dus in Amsterdam een half jaar aan deze film gewerkt. Multi tasking doe je dan wel aan, met zeven man.
– Presentator:
Iedereen doet dus een stukje?
– Sacha:
Ja, ik heb bijvoorbeeld het script, de regie, het toilet schoongemaakt, karakter design, storyboard.. dus.. ja, dat soort dingen moet allemaal wel.
– Presentator:
Laten we even kijken, we hebben al een stukje van de Making Of, hoe dat dan gaat..
Als het goed is, ja.
Hier onstaat dus..
– Sacha:
..dat is het storyboard zeg maar, daar begint het mee. Dat is essentieel. Als het in het storyboard niet werkt, dan werkt het ook niet in de uiteindelijke film.
Dit is dus een later proces, dit krijg je te zien..
– Presentator:
..en wat testen jullie hier? *lacht*
– Sacha:
Ja, referentie he? We moeten het zelf ook uitproberen.
– Presentator:
Even kijken hoe je het tekenen moet..
– Giel:
Het gras is wel mooier geworden dan hier
– Presentator:
Ja precies!
Het is beter dan hier in elk geval, Giel.
– Sacha:
Nouja, weet je wat het ook is? Mensen vergelijken ons met Pixar. Dat is onzin, het is gewoon de grootste onzin. Het gaat er gewoon om dat we stappen vooruit maken, en dat we steeds weer dichterbij komen bij dat …
– Giel:
Maar is het een beetje zoals Linux, zo van iedereen mag er aan zitten en ontwikkel het vooral door? Zoiets?
– Ton:
Het programma waarmee je dit kan maken is gratis, maar tegelijkertijd ook ‘vrije software’. Dus je kan het vrij gebruiken voor commerciele films, animatiefilms, en het is de techniek die in Hollywood gebruikt wordt.
– Presentator:
Dus voor iedereen?
– Ton:
Ja, we hebben nog niet dat onze software in Hollywood gebruikt wordt, maar we willen juist dat Hollywood software toegankelijk wordt voor iedereen.
– Giel:
Dus dan krijg je heel snel animatie porno en zo? Dat gaan mensen er mee maken dan natuurlijk..
– Sacha:
Kijk naar de titel: ‘Big Buck Bunny’, ik bedoel..
– Giel:
..dat zegt al genoeg?

..het gaat in ieder geval over een konijn!
