Sun to render Peach!
Exciting news! Sun Microsystems has agreed to donate processing power to render the Blender Foundation’s new open-movie venture, Peach! The corporation has granted the project free hours of computing time on their supercomputing network network.com. This will enable far faster rendering and allow the team to build more-complex scenes than they might have otherwise! See more on the official Peach blog.
Ton explains the new development like this:
With hundreds of Solaris nodes composed of 64 bit CPU’s and 4 gigs of memory per CPU, Sun Grid will give us virtually unlimited power!
This is also good news for the Solaris users out there, who’ll see a bit more attention and testing efforts for their OS. Further we’ll have to review the current state of renderfarm software and ensure that renderjobs can be properly monitored (blender log files). More food for the stats junks!

Well that’s pretty sweet. Not sure how you can transfer processing power over the net but if it works, then I’m all for it =)

Awesome, good to see Peach will have some very nice distributed rendering power behind it. I think I see one of Want’s Suzanne chocolates in the microscope lady’s mouth . . . leave it to Sun to turn Blender into a Research tool ;)

great I could do with some extra computer power myself too now just one day to the deathline and 1000 frames to do at 1 min a piece, well shouldnt have choosen a room full of mirrors then lol. Oh well I can spend the time reading up on how blender sound editing features work.

I had offered them 8-hours a day on my little 100-computer rendering farm, but this offer from Sun definitely trumped mine! Way to go Peach, and “Thank You” to Sun. I can’t wait to see the results.
