ottThe Ott Planetarium have released a new movie for their dome projector, called 'The Nature of Science'. You can see the entire show on their website, but like they say: 'but it's much better in the planetarium!'. Indeed. Any shows planned here in the Netherlands? :)

The Ott Planetarium is pleased to announce the release of The Nature of Science. This 21 minute planetarium show is designed to communicate what science is and how scientists work. A companion website (thenatureofscience.org) is in development.

The full program can be seen online at: weber.edu/planetarium/productions/nos.html

The show is available in the following formats: 1k MPEG-2, 1k M2V+OGG, with support for 2k Domemasters, 4k Domemasters and NTSC DVD coming soon.

The Nature of Science was produced with Blender; a free, open source production suite (see blender.org). The Ott Planetarium has been producing fulldome video since 2005 and has been using a Blender-based production pipeline since 2006. Blender-produced titles include: Cosmic Journey, Astro Otters, Astro Otters Jr., and several short pieces.

Wish the Scottish science fair in Edinburgh had picked this up instead of some of the lesser astronomy discussions they've been holding.

Nice! Science is very cool, so it's nice to see blender used to help advocate the study of science.

    "Astro Otters," eh? Hmm.

    Either way, kudos to them!

I just watched the video and I am wondering what sort of render/camera settings they used to get the "fisheye" effect for a planetarium dome.

@Robbie: they released their camera rig a few months ago:

I am inspired in the way blender and the promotion of science have come together in such a way. Am downloading plans to build my own planetarium, so I can view this in all its glory. Once ordered from them, of course!
