Osalt – open source alternatives.

osalt_logo.pngOsalt is an interesting website with a focus on providing a detailed listing of alternatives to commercial software. And can we all guess what software has been provided as an alternative…

Yep! Blender is listed as alternative to 3D Studio Max, Maya and Pixar's Renderman. The site is an interesting concept and while I'm sure it has been done before, Osalt does a good job of providing this resource in a clear way. I like how it provides descriptions of the commercial software as well as the open source versions, and that you can browse through the commercial software. Then pick software you are interested in and see alternatives.

The site also does a good job of providing for the individual browsing to the website by providing some simple resources. For instance, the Blender page even has a news feed from the Blender.org website, not to mention product ratings and comments can be made on each software choice.

Give the website a try if you are looking for a good open source alternative, you might find something you didn't even know existed. The only suggestions I'd have for the site would be a bit more resources listed. Blendernation and BlenderArtists aren't linked within the Blender description, additional resources like that would be of big benefit to those seeking more information about Blender. And those resources are missing among the other alternatives listed as well.

Find Osalt here.

I stumbled across this resource a few months ago. Great site!
Jahshaka looks promising, but seems slow in developement and a bit buggy.
Synfig is also listed as an alternative to Toon Boom (2d animation software).
Tryed adding Celtx about a few weeks ago, but it is still not there.

@ejoseph: maybe it`s because of that Celtx is (as far as I know) free, but not an OpenSource software.

  15. 15 kxs

No, sorry. According to Celtx website it is OpenSource. But it`s not under GPL license. "Celtx uses the CePL, which is a derivative of Netscape`s Mozilla Public License (MPL)." Maybe that`s the case. Great software, though.

kxs: thanks for looking into that. I had known that Celtx was built off of Mozilla code but i hadn't considered that which OS license it was under might be a factor.

However, Osalt does list Firefox, SeaMonkey, and Thunderbird so I don't think that there are any restrictions on which opensource license a program is under, just so long as it is opensource. Also, Osalt allows you to submitt commercial software so it should really matter wheather or not the software is opensource.

I will lookinto it further and try submitting again.
Thanks again for you input kxs.
