Marsman en Kadee

I meet a lot of starting musicians who can't pay to much for a music-video. But I do want to give em the chance to profile themselves with a booming music-video wich stand out. That's why I make 2D videoclips in Blender. It's easy, its got endless possibilities and it looks fine because of the semi 3D look and 3D motion.

This video is made for, rapper 'Kadee' and beatmaker 'Marsman'. They knew former work from me, and asked me to make a music-video. So they send me this dutch song called 'Hij is een baas' (wich means 'He's a boss'). They told me I could do whatever I liked, so I came up with this.

Because I was confident on what to do, worked on my one and had the whole idea in my head, I didn't made a script, shotlist or storyboard, to win me some time. I quickly sketched-up the project directly from the wrist in Inkscape and exported it as PNG files.

The toughest job was to lip-sync the whole thing. Because I used an animated material for it I couldn't see how it looked in the viewport, so I had to render the mouth to see if it was lip-sync. I started on animating that before i did the rest of the animation because you have to do the worst, first.

The lip-sync is the UV of the plane, animated over the ofsX of the mouth's texture. I used the rotation of a 'circel-with-an-arrow' to controle the mouth. Every 20 degrees of rotation chance the picture.
I did the same thing with the eye's.

I loved working on this project because of the quick progress and freedom I got from the client.
Eventually I did the whole project within 40 hours.

Check out my other Blender projects on www.gewoonnietnormaal.nl, I also make things 3D. There are a few projects upcoming.

    These look great

How can you work whit images to animate them?

  2. 2 Joost de Jonge

You use the images as a texture on planes. Then animate the planes by rigging them.
You can seen in the images in this article.

Can't say I like the song, or the "scene" around it, but the video was very nicely made. The inside look on how you made this was very nice. Cheers.

He is a Boss – you can tell by the hotties that hang with him…

    The vid is very creative.

  5. 5 Olaf

Cool! How about a tutorial on how you made this?

    Wow, nice work!
You mentioned that you spend 40 hours on this project, does this time include rendering time? How much time did you spend on rendering?

  8. 8 Nicknamz

looks great, yeap.. be nice some tut video ;)

  9. 9 Joost de Jonge

I will considder a tutorial. But I would like to know what you guy's (Olaf an Nicknamz) would like to learn from it.
Because these are pretty basic tools I used.

    @Janidotux
Yes that's the beauty of it. It includes rendertime. Total render-time is about an hour.

Hèèèl tuff! Beide muziek en animatie zijn goed!
    (and the translation)
Really great! Both music and animation are good!

  11. 11 JW

Animation is nicely done, but the sound (I refuse to call it music) is rubbish (en de tekst stelt al helemaal niks voor).

  12. 12 alt-here

Wow, one hour to render that whole thing? Damn! Great job!

  13. 13 Olaf

Hi Joost, i'm just interested in learning more about different techniques in Blender. These kinds of animations are pretty neat for certain kinds of presentations or even still frames for web pages.

  14. 14 Backiz

    Really cool animation and song!

Superb work! A tutorial would be fantastic! …from Inkscape to Blender.

    Great work!

    Very creative! Very nice animation!
I like the music too!! Where can I find more of it?

If a tutorial appears, let me know!

  17. 17 Nicknamz

great vid, very efficient and you can just sit back and enjoy watching the video!

Congratulations. A fantastic and inspirational use of 2D/3D. Very good work and keep it up.
    Tutorial would be handy! :)

  21. 21 ysvry

prima eigenstijl, de muziek is ook niet zo mijn ding maar de video is top.
"musicians who can't pay to much for a music-video" how much do you ask for such a video?
great work a tut on how you get the drawings into blender and how you rig them would be cool.

  22. 22 Janidotux

Thanks Joos for your answer. BTW I would like to see a mini-tutorial on how to make that sea, very nice effect.

  23. 23 Nixon

    @janidotux..
i'm not quite sure but it seems he created the water by mapping those blueish circle graphis onto planes, duplicates them several times along the x axis (using dupliframes or something maybe),
after that you could create multiple of those strips and put them behind each other,
last step would be to animate a movement on the x axis back and forth for each strip and just offsets the animation for each strip behind so u get the illusion of the moving waves/ planes with graphics,
this way u'd get an effect for the water wich resembles paralax scrolling or what it was called back then :)

I don't know if it was made this way it was just my 2cent, and I'm eager to learn if I was wrong

    anyway cool, fun vid..
too bad i don't understand dutch very well
