22

inkscape2.jpgInkscape 0.47 has been released, and it has an *insane* amount of new/improved features. Cool job, guys!

From their website:

After over a year of intensive development and refactoring, Inkscape 0.47 is out. This version of the SVG-based vector graphics editor brings improved performance and tons of new features, some of which are as follows: timed autosave, Spiro splines, auto-smooth nodes, Eraser tool, new modes in Tweak tool, snapping options toolbar & greater snapping abilities, new live path effects (including Envelope), over 200 preset SVG filters, new Cairo-based PS and EPS export, spell checker, many new extensions, optimized SVG code options, and much more.

Additionally, it would be wrong to not mention the hundreds of bug fixes. Check out the full release notes for more information about what has changed, enjoy the screenshots, or just jump right to downloading your package for Windows, Linux or Mac OS X.

And a little extra: if you're new to Inkscape, check out the free e-book 'Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program'.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I have tried 0.47 since the pre3 version. In the old 0.46 I could use my hyperpen 12000u tablet, but in the new version it refuses to work. It isn't even identified properly in the input-devices-menu. I have already reported the bug, but there is no solution for the problem yet. This is somewhat frustrating!

  2. Unsettlingsilence on

I love Inkscape. Just like Blender, once you learn how to use it, it is amazing! Being able to import bitmaps and convert them to vector, modify and export to blender, then use the better image, or convert the image to bump maps or 3d objects is so incredible. Finding Inkscape and Blender was like finding money in an amusement park. I've already tried out many of the new features in the pre-release and this is a huge upgrade!

  3. Sorry,Bart,
But the Inkscape-Book of Tavmjong Bah is NOT free as the pdf-download costs > 17 $. Only the HTML pages can be accessed without cost.
Actually I prefer the "Book of Inkscape" of Dmitry Kirsanov (of NoStarchPress, wich also published a Blender book), one of the developers of the program. You may find my evaluation of it at amazon.com.

  4. Been waiting for it,
works very good for the stuff I tried.
    Like the new eraser mode.

    Inkscape rocks!

(Now if they would add being able to use svgfonts and have multi-page. That would totally top it.)

  5. Inkscape is a great piece of software, but the latest release was seriously bugged (and slooooow, with a decent pc/decent amount of memory) for me :(
i hope this release will resolve the past issues

  6. Inkscape is my faverite Illustration program. It works well with blender(SVG format) too. November was an awsome month for software releases :)
