Sorry for the double post, but wordpress removed the keynames since I enclosed them in triangle brackets and wordpress interpreted them as html tags. So here we go again...

Hi,
this reminds me of a backup cheat I’ve read about a couple of months ago and use since then.

You can let blender autonumber your files when saving them. All you have to do is append a numeric value to the name of your .blend file, so it listens to the name “MyBigModel_01.blend” and then press “+” on the numpad when your mouse hovers over the filename field.

The whole procedure works as follows
- Save your file once and append a numeric value to the filename, right before the .blend. (MyBigModel.blend => MyBigModel_01.blend)

Then, whenever it deems you necessary, do the following:
- go into the “save file” dialog ([F2])
- hover your mouse pointer above the field with the file name (do _not_ click into this field!)
- Press the “+” on the num pad ([NUM-+])
- Blender now automatically counts the name so that “MyBigModel_01.blend” becomes “MyBigModel_02.blend”.
- Press save ([ENTER])

This takes about 3 seconds when you’re used to your keyboard. You now have versions of the blend file you are working on. Back them up for later recovery.

Yt,

At this point it may also be useful to re-iterate the message from the Blender/org testing builds forum:

"This forum is for distributing Blender builds from the CVS sources. These builds are not official releases, they are snapshots of the development work in progress between Blender versions. They may contain half working features, bugs, incompatibilities, render quality errors and it is strongly recommended that you don't use these builds for anything critical. On the bright side, you can play with new features and changes as they are added, and help provide some very welcome testing and feedback. For important work, please use the officially supported releases available at http://www.blender3d.org/Download/."

This is a good reminder to always have project backups available, located on a separate drive or in a separate backup folder.

Thanks for the warning.
