@epat: I agree!
But look at this: http://annieawards.org/foryourconsideration.html
Especially at "Best Animated Short Subject" (Sebastian's Voodoo); it's made with MAYA but it's great!!!

I think it's a common trait of bad films to treat gold bricks like they're made of plastic. I even saw a film on TV the other day where they were throwing them around like tennis balls and it was supposed to look serious. I mean, come on you people, have you ever tried lifting a gold brick? I bet you couldn't do it first time! So make it LOOK heavy in a film, even if it really is only made of plastic.

Of course, that's not what this award is about. The FX in the short are awesome, though I think the shot where the door gets blasted by the robot could've been better. It looks too thin and papery.

@Yellow

I think you've misunderstood the humor behind our wonderful nature.
It starts off seemingly like a normal documentary, but then becomes crazily far-fetched with the fight scene, thats where the humor of it comes from, its meant to be like that. It is in no way designed to be a proper documentary about the water shrew made to 'look good' by throwing in that fight scene.

@yellow: Are you nuts?!!!
"Our Wonderful Nature" won the "Best Well Told Fable Prize" at Siggraph 2008 and much more awards!!
An why is it nominated togehter with Hangar No5???
Well, HNo5 is a good thing. But unfortunately you cannot see any detail of the robot and of the compositing quality, because it's too dark. In every film which is "too" dark there is a lack of quality which you can only plaster in this way!

Hangar No 5 Team congratulations completing such a polished short.

@TimLA, there's no way Our Wonderful Nature will win IMOA, the nomination is for Outstanding Effects in a movie not creating a full blown 3D animation and Our Wonderful Nature has got problems, it goes off the rails, it's plain to see, they set out with a plan to do an animated animal documentary which looks up until half way through to be a boring 3D animated short exuding in photoreal and natural animal movements, realise it's dead boring and suddenly go into totally unatural stuff to try and save it. It's technically brilliant and congrats to that team as well but fails on everything else.

"This film was created as a part of the animation study at the Academy for Film and Television "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam. It is an attempt to create an animated animal documentry, that explores the mating habbits of the water shrew. The use of modern 3d tools enabled us to show the "true" events that take place in a 3 second battle between two males in a way that was never seen before... "

Very nice Blender usage no doubt. But movie itself is very reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid, full of references to it, like cigarretes, cardboard boxes and, of course, a metal gear. :)
