Game Engine Competition
Mal from CanDo Interactive is hosting a Blender game engine contest. The deadline is March 16th, and there’s a nice lineup of prizes.

This competition is being run to encourage developers ( or teams of developers ) to create fun, cool looking content for the Game Engine built into Blender.
With the release of 2.48, the GE has received a HUGE boost in terms of speed, functionality, and more importantly kudos.

That sounds interesting. I’m using the Blender Game Engine for the first time in a current project and I’m really starting to like it a lot. Only one thing though:
“Licensing, LGPL, and distributing a Blender GE run-time application as a closed application seems to be a gray area.”
Why would that be a gray area? The license should perfectly well allow you to redistribute your content any way you like. Worst case, you would have to distribute the Blender source code with your application – but not the source code to your own application. At least I was sure that being the case. Anyone knows for sure?

I’m not sure if I’ll enter yet, but still looking forward to the results.
hey that 3d virtual gallery on theire site was my ideer, made one 10 years ago called “theARTSTATION” any lawyer intrested in suiin them for me :P

I’ll update the site with some info on entering the competition. At the moment, the plan is that we’ll open the gates for entries in January, and any projects entered can be re-submitted ( eg with new levels, bugs fixed ) right up until March 16th.
Also, regarding prizes, one game *could* in theory win all categories so far – a non-Python game, that has both the best gameplay and the best graphics.

We “copied” the idea from Wolfenstein 3D, the first “3D” changable game that most people would have played.

It was released in May 1992 ( 16 years ago ) which trumps your 10, so I’d keep it down about 3d images on a wall being “your idea”, otherwise iD might sue *you* for at the very least claiming to have the rights over something they have “prior art” on – no pun intended :)
Also, anyone interested in entering a modifyable 3D art gallery using Blender is more than welcome to do so. It doesn’t *have* to be a game in order to get the graphics prize. Whether or not ysrv sues you is another thing – CanDo definitely wouldn’t ( even if we in theory *could*, which I very much doubt ), so you’re at least safe from us :)
can I enter the competition without Team (me only) or I need to do so?
What means “The content should be appropriate for viewing by a 16 year old”? It means no blood? How can I make a funny game without blood and body parts flying?
Fahassini, you can enter by yourself if you like.
Aristocrata, that depends on how graphic / realistic it is versus being funny. When submitting early entries, we can let you know if you’ve crossed the line, allowing you to make modifications based on what we might think was inappropriate.

i would like start my project for this Cpmpetition in the next days. Is it allowed to post w.i.p shorts/open up w.i.p. threads on graphic boards like blenderartists.org ?

I will do a game in Halo style. That means bloodshed of aliens. The color of blood we can negotiate …
Naturally, that the soldiers will also will be hurt when they are victims of friendly fire or of aliens.
Is that acceptable?

What about current trunk? There’s now the cool VideoTexture addition to the gameengine, and I’m sure that there will be more improvements until January. Can we use these?
Better get the new game engine book as soon as it comes out and get cracking! Have been playing with the idea of learning the GE, a comp like this is a really good incentive. Nice one.
Steffen, yep – you can post any info you like about your game before the competition.
Aristocrata – yep, should be good – I think the retriction will mostly be to do with nudity etc. If showing any screenshot of your game wouldn’t be allowed on the front page of Blender.org, then this to me would be unsuitable.
Nathan – for sure you can use the latest version of Blender / GE from the trunk, and the new features.

I have one question though: what are the specifications of the testing computers? Basic? Medium-range? High performance? It would be nice to not have to worry about whether the judges will be capable of playing a game or not.
