'Fourteen, Frets & Faith', a Highschool Movie Project

3

A large Australian highschool movie project contains a solid chunk of Blender work.

Gordon Collis writes:

Two and a half years in the making and our short film, ‘Fourteen Frets & Faith’ is nearly complete. The Premiere is booked at the Bigscreen Cinemas, Hervey Bay for the 1st of September. This 27 minute film made by Hervey Bay youth contains 5 minutes of 3D animation created in Blender. The average age of the animation team at the beginning of the project was 13 years and approximately 300 youth in total were involved in the workshops and production of this film.

New to film making, the team of Arts teachers and students at Urangan State High School, Hervey Bay, Australia decided to make a School Movie instead of the traditional School Musical. The project grew from a School Movie to a Community Movie Project and $50,000 worth of grants were secured to bring Australia’s leading industry professionals to the Bay to work with youth and share their knowledge of film making. Fourteen, Frets & Faith is an original script with an original score and songs written by local youth.

THE STORY OF 'FOURTEEN, FRETS & FAITH'

James, brought up by his mother and grandmother, is an average teenage boy.  Not an outsider, but not part of the in-crowd.  He longs for an electric guitar that will allow him to both show the world he’s really a Rock God in waiting, and help him to impress Faith, a close friend and the girl of his dreams.  When his much anticipated birthday arrives he finds himself in possession of a guitar, but it is obviously pre-used and appears to possess neither Rock God status, nor girl impressing power.  Hiding his disappointment and embarrassment becomes his main goal in life, but the guitar begins to change him…

The guitar and the universe conspire in a series of events both live and animated, which help James to realise that he may not have got what he originally wanted, but he certainly got what he needed.

When asked about the availability of the movie for the rest of us, Gordon answers:

We do plan to release the film on the internet, however we will look at entering it into a couple of film festivals for the kids first and I believe that the condition of some of the Australian Festivals is that it can't be released on the internet prior. I will look into it more in the next couple of weeks and make another post when we do release it.
