Elephants Dream in CGSociety’s CG Retrospective 2006
Here’s a nice Christmas present for y’all: Elephants Dream was included in CGSociety’s CG Retrospective 2006; a public-voted list of the twenty most important developments in CG in 2006! It made sixth place, making it cooler than the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii, Pixar’s ‘Cars’ and several major commercial packages.
The criteria for selection, is that the event had to be innovative, landmark or extremely cool.
We were interested in anything related to the CG industry – software releases, movies, short films, games, products, or anything that had a profound effect on the CG industry this year. Many thousands of people viewed the threads related to the CG Retrospective 2006 and offered suggestions to the items that should be on the list and here we now present the public-voted list of CG-related coolness!
Congratulations to everyone who’s involved!
Cooler? Wouldn’t think so.. Landmark? Sure. I just wish it would have been a better landmark but that’s just harsh me:-/
the character animstions – not the rigs – were under my expectations
WOW! Quite an accoplishment! Character animations were in the general spirt of the movie: little bit disturbing, but even better beacuse of that!
I,ve been reading the list, and at Lightwave’s release there some coolness but also some mentions that left me scratching my head: like Cattmull Clark subdivision, Oren Nayar shader and some other things that Blender has a for a long time already. I thought that those were standard features for any self respecting 3D app to have.
every 3d app has advantages and disadvantages blender being the more advanced.
i agree with bellorum…first open source movie has to be big.

Blender sucks, Elephants Dream would not have been given so much fanfare if it had been created with a commercial 3d app. It’s an OKAY animated short at best. Mediocre animations, even when created with free software are still just that, MEDIOCRE

Uhm, and just why exactly do you think that blender sucks? come on tell us! The beauty with open source is that you can actually do something about the things you don’t like. Of course it involves some work, but shouldn’t be a problem, right?

Well, that’s mostly true, but so what? That is the point! That’s why it’s important, because it shows what can be accomplished by means of open collaboration of people around the world. Thanks to Blender, everybody has access to a freely available AND modifiable 3d app. Elephants Dream pushed this idea even further, releasing all the productions files freely.
(And remember that ED was made by non pros).

after (what’s it been now, 10+ years? i forget) all this time with blender; Elephants Dream was a landmark in my opinion. never had i seen a product of such complexity (project, development, and subject matter) done in blender. the theme also tweaked my particular sense of the anvant garde absurdity :)

Hey I bought a book on 3d character animation using blender 2.4, and yet… it didn’t include the doc file, you know the one you cant download from wiki blender, on the books cd. who do you have to suck off to get to download the entire documentation for blender 2.4 (as it is now only) in one stupid pdf, like it says you can on this page;

@Bruce: as far as I know, you can’t download the Blender wiki content. To support Blender development, the Blender Foundation regularly picks up the wiki’s contents and publishes them both in print and in PDF. You can purchase the here:
