‘Doljer’ Released, Including .Blend Files

It took some time to iron out encoding and hosting problems, but now Adam Procter has released his short animation Doljer, which was accepted into the UK filmvestival Filmstock in Luton earlier this year. Adam has also released a whopping 223MB of project files under a Creative Commons license (although I’m not sure which license exactly. Adam?).

The description of the project was “A racoon, alone in the woods, to the haunting sounds of â€˜The Knife’.”. While nicely made (I love the atmosphere, the music and the imagery of the racoon), I *did* end up feeling a bit underwhelmed at the end because there’s one thing missing: a plot. The racoon walks and walks and, oh!, the end.

Still, I think it’s one of the better Blender productions I’ve seen this year and I think you should check it out.

one advice.. next time look into using groups in blender. i mean, you have A LOT of tree meshes in there, and mostly they are just duplicates. :)

I liked the somewhat dark, moody music by The Knife (reminded me in a way of the violins at the end of Requiem for a Dream). It is a pity that the images did end in some sort of climax. I expected more drama, especially at the end. Nevertheless, a well done production and great work.

If people have there own thoughts about the plot please comment on my site, I have my own plot but that’s for me.

I like the music and the mood. But I have to agree that a plot or story would have helped. Of course, this short could have been made in the grand tradition of Elephants Dream; there *is* a plot but it’s completely incomprehensible. :-)

This is a great experimental 2d animation movie, let’s not forget most animation on TV is 2d.
I hope some day the coders will develop the toon line so we can have different coloured toon lines around different objects.
Please remember 2d is still very popular, and blender can be used to develop 2d toons, just like toon boom.

Thanks for sharing the project files but, you might want to clean them up a bit. There are a ton of things that could be removed to greatly reduce the size of the download. Thanks again!

The credits (start + end) make for about 40% of the movie ;) but otherwise it’s… interesting.

I didnt liked it. No story, repetitive, really bad… i’m sorry. Theres people saying its one of the best this year.. thats not true.

It’s a cute sketch, sort of a rough draft of the mood for a scene. As a finished film, though, it leaves much to be desired.

– Why do the trees float?
– When we are approaching the first light source, some tension develops. We then whiz past it, seeing an unexplained cone of light from an invisible light source. Why?
– This keeps happening, though never as blatantly as the first. Is it an accident? What are these lights supposed to be?
– Why are there lights in the woods at all? Why does the character pay them no regard whatsoever?
– The character never waivers from his simple walk cycle, does he? If he’s scared, shouldn’t there be some sort of reaction?

It’s a great start. Now write a story and use the animation to tell it.

Give him a goal, some motivation for being there. Have some things happen and animate his reaction to them. Make sure we know why he reacts the way he does. Build on the tension, create a climactic event, release the tension and let the end credits roll. *Then* you’ll have a short film.
