Previous week report, from Blender Conference meeting
- Blender 2.5 "beta 0" naming still has some pro/contra discussions… in some aspects it's more like an alpha. Everyone agrees it has to be communicated as a test build when released

The Blender Foundation have received sponsorship to hire a full-time Blender developer for 9 months to work on Blender 2.5. If the project goes well, they will pay for another period to work on other Blender projects. Ton just announced that Matt Ebb (Blender coding/animation guru) has agreed to fill the position. The sponsoring party remains undisclosed ("but it's not Steve Jobs, don't worry!").
Virgilio Vasconcelos has recently compared the render speed of the current version of Blender (2.49) with the latest 2.5 build (svn revision 23930). The render optimizations are thanks to Jaguarandi and his Google summer of code 2009 project. The results are very impressive!

Article submitted by Chris Want. Freshman university student (and well-known Blender coder) Joshua Leung from New Zealand participated in the 2009 Google Summer of Code program (GSoC). His goal: to rewrite Blender's Non-Linear Animation (NLA) system for Blender 2.5. Joshua has reached and surpassed his goal, with the guidance of his mentor, Matt Ebb, and his work has been merged into the Blender 2.5 branch.
Over at Blender Development we're starting to see some interesting videos as people test out the new smoke system being developed by Daniel Genrich for the 2.5 release. If you haven't been keeping an eye on the main blog, then here's a roundup of the latest developments.
Here's a teaser video of the new 'disconnect' feature of Jahka's particles. It allows you to disconnect/reconnect particle systems from their emitter mesh so you can change the geometry.
