Fresh Blender News, Every Day
Ton Roosendaal will be giving a presentation called 'Open Source Blender' during the 'Focus on Themes and Future Vision' session at the Dutch Game Days 2006 in Utrecht on november 23rd 2006.
*After the great interview of @ndy, Mark continues on through his list of interviewees at Siggraph 2006.
During Siggraph 2006, I had the opportunity meet and interview Colin Levy (effstops) who was there to not only support Blender but do a presentation on the techniques he used to make "Suburban Plight" with Blender, which we posted about a while back. Colin has been a part of the Blender community for a long time (and being no stranger to BlenderNation headlines) contributing some good tutorials and great art work.
During Siggraph 2006, Mark Puttnam (who along with Bob Holcomb, Martin and Dave was keeping an eye on all the Linux machines) conducted the following interview with several Blender notables. The first was Andy Goralczyk aka @ndy.
BlenderNation writer Daniel LaBarge recently had a chance to sit down and talk with Sandra Gilbert (DreamsGate) of BlenderArt Magazine to discuss her interests in Blender and a retrospective on the magazine which she manages. The interview covers everything from her beginning in Blender to what suggestions she offer for others interested in producing a digital magazine.
One of our prominent community members has some wonderful news to share. Sandra Gilbert, editor of BlenderArt Magazine, has given life to a daughter.
Earlier this week I had dinner with Ton Roosendaal in Amsterdam in Jamie Oliver's restaurant 'Fifteen'. As always, it was a lot of fun and we discussed all kinds of Blender topics all night.
We received many reports on the appearance of the Skategirl demo on a show called 'Modern Marvels' of the History Channel. As it happens, at Siggraph we ran into Randall Rickert, a Blender user who currently animates for the History Channel. As a former NaN employee he was one of the creators of Skategirl, so I figured I'd go ahead and ask him if he knew anything about this.

Last month (July 9-15) in Raleigh, North Carolina, Red Hat held a summer tech camp for 52 rising 8th and 9th-grade students. At this camp, students could choose to learn how to use open source software in one of four tracks: web design, video, audio, and 3D modeling/animation. Blender was the application of choice for the 3D track. While students in the other three tracks were instructed by Red Hat employees, the 14 students in the 3D course were taught by three blenderheads who volunteered from the community: Jonathan Williamson (mr_bomb), Jeffery McGregor (Enzoblue), and Jason "Groo" van Gumster (Fweeb).

After seeing the two threads about the new amateur film (video) called "V de Vicioso", a parody of the 80's "V" tv series and how all the 3D VFX was done with Blender, Bart (I'm posting in his name - etr9j) asked Nicolas Morenas (Caronte - the guy who did all the Blender work) some questions on the project:

The Blender Google Summer of Code (GSoC) projects are still going strong and their is still more that we haven't touched on. We’ve looked at the very early stages of the Sculpt tool, the Modifier Stack Upgrade, and now we look at Dmitriy Mazovka's Sky Gen project.

Colin Levy (effstops) has done it again. Not only has he made another great film, but he's also posted a great video entitled "Breakdown/Overview of a VFX Shot in Suburban Plight." This overview is what Colin presented at Siggraph at the Open Source Pavillion to show what Blender can do. Bart never got a chance to film Colin in action so we are lucky to have the overview available to us!

The Blender Google Summer of Code (GSoC) projects are still in full swing and the projects are usually quiet until they are finally released. We've looked at the very early stages of the Sculpt tool, and now I ask Ben Batt (artificer) about his Modifier Stack Upgrade.

The Google Summer of Code Blender project acceptance results are in, and like many of you, we are shocked that so few Blender projects were accepted this year (in 2005, ten projects were accepted). That being said, some amazing new features will come out of SoC this year, and we're grateful to Google for their funding and support of these projects.
