Bullet Physics Contest Voting Has Started
I ran into Erwin Coumans at the Open Source Pavilion at Siggraph where he showed me the 15 entries that he has received for his Bullet Physics Contest. Erwin is the original developer of the Blender 2.0 game engine and he is now working for Sony where he is developing the Bullet Physics Library for the PlayStation 3. Sony has allowed him to open source part of that library and he has been busy implementing it in Blender.
Some of the games, such as Ozone Force and HellStation Pinnball come with documentation on their development and they make for some interesting reading.
I am impressed both by the results of the contest and by the amount of energy that Erwin is putting into developing and promoting Blender’s interactive capabilities. Thanks, Erwin!
Hey, good to see my video getting so much traffic :D I can’t really take credit for the awesome content though. The more you play with all the entries, the more I fall in love with every single one. The effort that was put into each is amazing. Even “Thug”, which most people agreed looked pretty silly, has some impressive facets to it like the AI and half-decent car physics.
I can’t wait to see who wins…

On a completely unrelated note… I havn’t finished a site for the music, but I did write it. It started as a project to get music for the Blender Community Game Project’s Underwater Racing Game… Anyhow, if you’d like some audio files throw me an e-mail [email protected]
Gotta admit I’m quite impressed with the entries. Never thought Blender could handle this kind of thing (sorry), but I’ve been proved wrong.
Some are really promising, all need more work obviously, but some damn good starts means a lot show good potential to show off what the BGE can do.

for a months part time work by solo artist, i don’t think it mattered wat engine you used, the results would have been similar to some of these.

I didn’t know he worked for Sony! So basically Blender’s Game Engine will have almost the same physics capabilities as the PS3? That’s amazing!
oh well – thanks goes to sony also then for letting him make bullet open-source… but main thanks to erwin (obviously) and the creators of the games!! :) some of them still need some work but lets just hope the creators don’t stop there – it would be nice to see these games continued and finished; hopefully they will turn out as nice rounded, polished works of art… -epat.

epat – erwin wrote bullet by himself, it doesn’t matter where he worked or works. I think he’s done it from scratch, so he’s the author and doesn’t have to ask anybody to GPL his work… :)
Bullet is not GPL, it is under a GPL compatible license. If Erwin wrote it for Sony while in their employment then he would likely need permission to release it (most contracts require assignment of copyright for work done during work hours).

FACTOID: Disney presidented that sort of copyrighting way back in the day. Dreamworks — established by primarily ex-Disney animators — left because they saw that as a problem, and thus have the rights to “doodles”.
In the case of Bullet, which is certainly not a “doodle”, well you get the idea.
