Sadly, Gat, I have to agree. Windows 98 is either the most amazingly subtle and realistic render I have ever seen, or it is a photo. I have no proof either way. Also, see the December 2005 gallery, where there is another image by Benoît Guédel. I'll eat my hat if that's not a photo taken with a real-life optical zoom lens. Check out the reflections/flare on the chin, surface detail, and the highly realistic depth-of-focus.

I would love to be proved wrong, and if so I'd love to see how it was achieved.

Is Windows 1998 a render? because it looks like a photo, there is way too much detail and abnormal lines, and texture is perfect. Also, if it was rendered it was rendered using some kind of engine I have never seen before, because of the shadows. Does anyone agree?

Nice work in the gallery. Congrats to everyone who is in there.

I notice that the different external renderers are separated in the gallery. In the past it was just Blender internal / Yafray. With the addition of other renderers, it seems that the best course of action would be to simply have two categories 'Blender internal' and 'Blender with external renderer'.

It seems there's been an explosion of other renderers lately (as well as more work underway to link to other existing renderers), so I can just imagine that someday soon we'd have:
Blender internal
Yafray
PovRay
Indigo
Sunflow
Freestyle
Kerkythea
Maxwell Render
Mental Ray
Pixie
Aqsis

I understand the distinction between the 'pure' Blender internal vs the others (as it represents what you can do 'out of the box' with no other enhancements) but to distinguish between all the others seems like it could get ugly quickly. I'd imagine just a small text element under the piece (with the name/email info) would still convey the info (ie. 'Rendered with NameOfRenderer') but without fracturing the page so much.

I would love see a wireframe for "Windows 1998." Or even more impressive the material settings. Nice work!
