wiimotes-1It's always fun to see what use that someone comes up with for Blender. As to real-time puppetry we've had game-pad control and now in this caseThomas Eldredge aka teldredge has been experimenting using Wii remotes to control a real time puppet.

"A little while ago I created a 'marionette' animation test using WiiMotes over OSC to control a 'ragdoll' type puppet. I made a short video demonstrating it."

Links to the setup files (only for the very brave)

Plus a little jingle advertisement for Blender I made for fun.

Now that is COOL! Would love to see it perfected and under the control of a real puppeteer. :P

Also, that jingle video was masterful! :O

I liked the wiimote setup, but the jingle ad didn't make much sense.

    muy interesante…
hay que echarle una mirada :)

The wiimote has some exciting possibilities and the music of the jiggle is surprisingly catchy I found myself singing it later, although the visuals of the jiggle were a bit confusing, still as you said you made it for fun.

Looks good .. and honestly I can see this (once perfected) as an easy way to throw together a quick animation for later tweaking … well done. Well done indeed.

Lol, I think the puppet is an expert at Breakdancing :D
Looks like a very interesting technique to – as Tadd Mencer said – create a basic animation :)

Hey thanks everyone, I'm glad you all dig this.

This was done before the physic update in 2.49 so I have yet to take advantage of the new constraints.
The Wiimotes themselves are poorly calibrated but they work well enough. But with OSC the possibilities for input devices is endless.
I have yet to figure out a smooth system for how to record the animation in stages. Seems like 2.5 might provide more avenues for this sort of thing.
Also it relies on GlovePIE and BlueSoliel, which are not open source
and have their own pretty massive quirks.

Anyway it was a fun project and I'll be getting back to it soon.
    Thanks for checking it out.

    Thomas,

This is super cool. Great Work. I agree with Blendroid, the jingle is masterful

    NOObhaxor,

You didn't get the jingle? Thats suprising since your original and witty L33tsp3Ak name makes you seem like you would.

THAT JINGLE MADE ME CRY LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!!!!

    VERY SCARY!!!

Wii remote stuff was cool though.

Puppet control is much better with simulated physics, but it also need to be mixed with a standard rig so that normal posing can happen. I am not sure if Bullet will allow you to violate a cyclic dependency, im using Open Dynamics Engine which does allow this.
