Blender logo usage guidelines
It may come as a bit of a surprise that not everything about Blender is Open Source – the logo and the brand name ‘Blender’. This is not uncommon for Open Source projects – the Mozilla Foundation and TYPO3 association (I’m an avid TYPO3 user) both do something similar with their brand and logo. The Blender Foundation have now published a set of proper guidelines for the use of the Blender logo.
Ton Roosendaal writes:
Blender’s logo has been used in 100s of ways, in artwork, as smileys, as part of other logos in headers of community websites. This was – and still is – considered to be an honest tribute to Blender, and the guidelines are not meant to make all these versions “illegal” or “officially disapproved”.
This page is only meant to clarify the official Blender Foundation guidelines, so people know what their minimum rights are how and when to use the logo.
Making fun and cool versions of the Blender logo is really part your own artistic freedom, and Blender Foundation will never act against such tributes. Just don’t expect us to “officially approve” it, that’s all. :)

I see it totally natural.
Just curious, what about the “seven hexagons” logo that appears on the splash screen and some of the books? Is that the Blender Foundation’s logo? In which case, I guess it shouldn’t be used except by the BF.

I think that the “seven hexagons” has to do with Blender Institute.

Yep, the hexagon logo is for Blender Foundation.

I took one of the shapes to make Institute logo:

Obviously we don’t needs rules to use these logos, they’re just identity tags for the organizations. :)
If you link to or write about Foundation or Institute, feel free to use it though.
So the Blender logo used in openSUSE is a bad one…
Ton it would be good if blender would add some sort of text to the license as I looked into all the license text in the source code and it doesn’t state anything about the logo not being part of the GPL code but the logo is distributed as part of the source code in svg and bitmap form. I see no way that someone can actually tell wether the logo is part or not part of the OSS nature of blender.
Does this mean I am going to have to get my tattoo removed now? Mooning Maya users is not going to be as effective anymore! j/k

What about the “Firefox-Case”
IIRC, it is not allowed to distribute Firefox with the name Firefox and without all the Firefox-artwork/-branding.
So, the Free Software Foundation and some distributors made own versions of Firefox under a different name.
Since Blender is listed in the FSF Software Directory, I guess the guidelines on this aren’t that strict there.
