Blender Developers Meeting Notes

10

codeThings were hectic at the Blender Foundation this week with the arrival of the Durian team. Still, Ton managed to list the most important issues for you.

Ton wrote:

Hi all,

Last sunday was the day the Durian artists arrived here; so I had to open the door seven times, welcome people and give them the famous studio tour ("And there you can see the elephants, in about 2-3 years"). [NOTE BART: The Blender Foundation is located opposite the famous Amsterdam Zoo 'Artis']

  • Means: I could only get some snippets of the meeting; but what I know:
  • 2.49a release update: Windows topics will be tackled by Nathan Letwory. Next sunday do final check, then it could be launched.
  • GSoC: project for faster mesh drawing is finished, and candidate for integrating in 2.5 code. Pends review from either Brecht and/or Ton and/or Joe..
  • 2.5: project still goes on happily! But it's now time to get good docs, a tracker for user feedback. Ton/Brecht are main candidates to make this, but their hands are tied all week with the Durian pre-production week.

Next week a better report!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. A 2.49a or 2.49b bug fix release would be really welcome. If you look at the Bugtracker list, there are at least 150 bug reports given to nobody so far.

  2. Campbell Barton (ideasman42) on

@ROUBAL, The aim of 2.49b is not to fix lots of bugs currently in the tracker, but to make a release that contains fixes since the last release (some fairly important).
Getting the tracker under 50 is for major releases.

Of course if there are high priority bugs like crashes in common cases then these should be looked into.

If too much attention is given to 2.49b it will hold back 2.5 development.

150bugs is a bit misleading, some of those are not bugs.

Bit off topic but Artis ( the best zoo in Europe) is my sons favorite zoo, and he's just learning Blender (he's 10) but we've seen the elephants (at Artis) and are both excited by Durian and 2.5. We're not disappointed at all
    Thanks Dr Ton

  4. @Campbell Barton : I said bugs reports, no bugs. I know that some of them can not be real bugs, but some of them are real and important. Some were already in 2.48 a and some have been introduced by 2.49. My fear is to see them imported in 2.5. If that happened, we would have to wait for 2.5a in best case to get them solved...

But I am concious that it is a lot of work !

  5. gsoc stuff sounds great...everythings better if its faster ;)
just look at the success of fast-food and fast cars ...

    great news:)
