Blender and SecondLife

14

CartoonSmart.com just released John Nyquist's 7th full-length Blender training video. This lesson is for both Blender and SecondLife users.

This lesson is for Blender users and SecondLife users.

Lesson 1 - Just the Basics
This section is for the Second Life user who has never used Blender. It will teach you enough of the basics to get started.

Lesson 2 - Adding Clothes
In this part, you will learn to bring in one of the standard meshes and import in your images. After viewing in Blender, the image is brought into SecondLife and you are shown how to use it to create clothes in-world.

Lesson 3 - Skirt
This section deals with the skirt's mesh.

Lesson 4 - Projection Painting
Even experienced Blender users will appreciate this section. Use images to paint on your clothes with Blender's powerful projection painting features. You'll start from scratch (a blank image), and use four different photographs as your source images to create a UV texture. You'll also learn the tools, as well as the workflow, for using multiple source images. This technique is useful well-beyond SecondLife clothes. You can use it to create texture maps for illustration, animation, games, etc.

Lesson 5 - Beyond the Basics
Go further and learn the different OBJ import options and strategies to combine, group, and separate meshes. Then view the UV textures in the game engine and when they are rendered.

Lesson 6 - Super Quick Start
You've done the tutorial, now watch a quick refresher on how to bring in the model and images to view the clothes in-world.

  4. I can't find this on their site.

At http://www.cartoonsmart.com there is a "Tutorials" ribbon that includes "Blender". However, that takes me to a page that has 5 "Courses for Blender": Blender Basics, Blender Basics 4, Blender Materials and Textures, Blender Logic Bricks, and 3D Game Art (for Flash games). I click on each for more information and none mention SecondLife. Why not give a link directly to the tutorial?

  5. @roofoo yeah, you have to pay a mind-boggling $10 that'll save you hours and hours of research and experimentation. But if your time is only worth 25-cents/hour it may be cost-prohibitive.

  6. Just paid my ten bucks (in Euroland it's even less for the time being ;-P...) by PenPal & now the 637 MB download is already happily creeping along (at 315 KB/s).

Seems that the price is an "introductory offer",though. So better decide for yourself "just in time" if it's worth to get :).....

  7. @rooffoo This course is $10. I should have included that info in the info I sent to BlenderNation. Sorry about the ommision, it wasn't omitted intentionally. All my CartoonSmart.com courses are for sale. All my episodes of Bits of Blender are free.

@Wolfram I think you're kidding, but in case you're not... Usually the monthly special is cheaper, but it's usually good for more than a month, http://www.cartoonsmart.com/this_month.php5, not really a high-pressure situation. I get higher download speeds than what you're getting, if it is a problem for you, let me know and I'll let CartoonSmart.com know: [email protected]. Also, let me know what you think of the course after you've worked through it or if you have questions during it.

@everyone BTW, a note about my courses/style (I should really blog on this). When I do courses, it is with the intent that the user is working through as they watch (it's not a tv show, although I do know folks who like to watch first, then work through as they watch again). The courses are in realtime. I don't do voice over later. I don't timelapse. If there is a long render, I'll pause the recording but otherwise the time of the lesson is how long it took. Typically, it can take a user 2-3 times the length of a video to work through all of it (depending on experience), which is why I try to keep them 2-4 hours. I like to think of it as if I were sitting down with a friend explaining something cool to them. They're more formal than my Bits of Blender because I'm following an outline and my BoB co-host is not there, but hopefully I still sound like I'm talking to you, not lecturing :-)
