Blender 2.5 Winter Camp
The Institute for Network Cultures has invited the core developers of Blender to Amsterdam for a ‘Blender sprint’.
Winter Camp is an event, organized by the Institute of Network Cultures and will take place 3-7 March ‘09 in Amsterdam. A dozen networks (each of which has 5-15 people) have been invited to work on their specific current topics. The Winter Camp will be a mix of presentations and work spaces with an emphasis on getting things done.
Network Cultures covers for all participants travel expenses, housing and dinners during the event. This exciting offer makes it possible to get people from the Blender team from 4 continents to come over:
- Andrea Weikert, Germany
- Campbell Barton, Australia
- Diego Borghetti, Argentina
- Jean-Luc Peurriere, France
- Matt Ebb, Australia
- Martin Poirier, Canada
- Nathan Letwory, Finland
- William Reynish, Denmark
And of course the Blender Institute staff – Brecht van Lommel and Ton Roosendaal – will be participating.
This event is perfectly in time to get started with the last – and most visible – stage of the Blender 2.5 project; all issues related to designing and implementing an improved workflow in Blender, interface concepts and design, and efficient models for providing tools.
Agenda topics will be publicly discussed on the Blender 2.5 mailing list and on our wiki. We’ll also make sure things will get published and become public nicely, probably with some videos but at least with extensive reporting back to the community.
This is truely going to be an exciting week! Lots of thanks to the Network Cultures organization to make this happen.

This is great news, just wondering though and I would love to hear Tons views on it, but shouldn’t we the “community” put together a donation drive to be able to extend the developers stay should that be needed and or make their stay over those few days even more memorable? I suppose this would also depend on the conditions set by the Institute of Network Cultures, but I can definitely see a cause as big and as important as this be handled similarly to the open movie projects.
What would the community at large think of supporting something like that, or the foundation itself. I mean we all know the benefits that would derive from thus doing so.
Never knew that William was a developer too, or is this in the capacity of his work on the new GUI concept?

This Will Be Super! I have high hopes for what comes out of this.
Hey, I have a question that I’ve been thinking about for a little while now.
Particles got an overhaul, aren’t backwards compatible, and now need baking to even see. My question is mostly due to having no idea how the new system works and the lack of instant feedback.
Since they aren’t backwards compatible, is it possible to ditch the attempt to adapt to the new system and get a the old particle instant feedback integrated?
On a more related note, I had an old computer sitting around, fired it up the other day looking for something that might have been on it. I totally forgot I had put Blender on it. Version 2.12. I am absolutely amazed at how far Blender has come from 2.12 to 2.48. I even have a copy of 1.73 floating around. I think that was the one where I wrote Blender off as being much too difficult to learn.

You should ask this at blenderartists.org/forum for a proper answer/discussion. However, the new particle system should not need to be baked just to see it work. Ordinary emitter particles should be just as easy to set up as in the old system. I’m wondering if you don’t have a graphics card issue. Otherwise, I’m not sure what the instant feedback problem might be.
