Blender 2.49b Released

splash_template_249_1Blender 2.49b was released earlier today. 2.49b is a bugfix release and but also contains some new functionality.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Even while a lot of energy and time goes to the 2.5 project, there is still love and care for the current stable version. In the past months a very impressive list of fixes has been applied, worth publishing as an official 2.49b release.

Check out the release log for detailed information. It contains little gems like 'Mathutils (quat_a*quat_b) was broken, returned (quat_a*quat_a) instead' and 'Fixed KX_PolyProxy returning improper VertexIndex with mixed triangles and quads with using .getVertexIndex() and .v1, .v2, etc'. I bet you wonder how you managed to get *anything* done with these bugs in place, eh?

    Great!
Looking forward to 2.5…. but this is great too.

  2. 2 rennurb3000

does the reinstancing of the collision object also work with armature rigged meshes ?? (in game engine)

  3. 3 Afief

Seriously, Blender 2.5 sounds like it'll have ponies in the package :D Stop hyping the thing too much, some people will think "2.5 will let any idiot be able to make movies like Durian and BBB"

  4. 4 Bart

I heard 2.50 will have the much anticipated 'make beautiful animation' button, which will instantly transform your crappy work into something that'll put BBB to shame.

  5. 5 dusty

    LOL!!! Very funny Bart!

But yeah! happy to see this build out already!!!

And yes I am looking forward to 2.5 as it's interface works almost exactly how I would like it to.

Yep, sure can't wait for 2.5….. yep! ;)

I got a broken link trying to download 2.49b release…and you?

We regularly get asked to include a 'make things look nice' button on some of the software we use here. So tempted just to drop one in with a slightly humorous easter egg in there.

Good update well interesting set of fixes (specially the python api for particles!)

@rennurb3000, see the video, it works for armatures, shape-keys, subsurf, modifiers & display verts changed from python.

Id also like to mention that though this list looks fairly large, I think its the first time we listed every fix to blender in a release log.
Most of the time we ignore smaller fixes and only note the most user visible ones, but this at least gives some insight into all the changes that go on even when the devs are focusing elsewhere.

Ugh, the download speed from the USA mirror for 64-bit is horrible! I can't get it to work. Why can't the files be uploaded to sourceforge.net? This software is free and open source, so it meets the requirements for that website. Creating a download page on Sourceforge would be great, because then more people would find out about Blender. Not to mention, we would all get much faster downloads.

  10. 10 Lasphere

okay, so the blender aerver is already smashed by people downloading this release. I bet they explode the day 2.5 is released..! But GREAT news anyway! ;)

  11. 11 ROUBAL

    Thank you for this release.

Well, links not working right now. I'll try again later, there is no emergency !

For what I have read, the only two bad bugs I had encountered seem to be not fixed in this release… :o(( Fortunately Atom has been kind and wrote me a script fixing the most annoying one while waiting for a built-in solution (hair particles driven by an animated texture not refreshed when changing frame).

  12. 12 Bart

Try the NL 2 mirror, works like a charm here. This is a university server which should be on a *very* fast line. Download.blender.org seems to be down (again).

  13. 13 Johan

    wOW

Que alegria, Esto es de celebrar ^_^.

  14. 14 Kirado

Is blender.org getting pummelled by all the download traffic? I get a 504 error from the download links.

  15. 15 ton

download.blender.org had a hanging httpd… restarted it. Poor old xserve (2002!) is getting too ancient probably.

  16. 16 Minifig

Is there a .zip archive available for 32 bit Windows?
Currently I only see the 32 bit Windows installer and 64 bit Windows .zip archive…
    [edit] Fixed!

  17. 17 JackRED

    That's done for the 2.49b fix… Next step, the 2.5 :D

  18. 18 random

Lets be honest. 99.999% of us blender users dont need 2.49b.
    But shrug whatever.

  19. 19 Bart

@random: wow, inspiring. Of course, you don't need cable-tv, the internet or a car either. But they're awfully nice to have!

  20. 20 goeland57

Nice work for all. Blender is the best because the team work for us, for free !!!

  21. 21 FunkyWyrm

OMG!! Mathutils was bugged? No wonder that I couldn't understand what was happening. I had to do things in a weird way to get anything even slightly right. I'll have to revisit my semi-abandoned project. Quaternions are beasts to learn the workings of. I guess if I'd kept plugging away I could have isolated this bug, but I still don't understand the things… Maybe now Mathutils is fixed. :-s

Much respect to the devs for this bug fix release. It can't be easy to maintain 2.4x whilst keeping 2.5's breakneck development speed at the same time.

  22. 22 gokudomatic

    @bart:
I don't think a car is so awfully nice to have. We can live without and still be happy.
But without a bleeding edge blender, I can't be happy.

  23. 23 ralmon

Hmm. I keep a. I don't need the new functionalities of b yet. Unless if b is faster in rendering or something.

  24. 24 madturtle

    Great news!!!!
    …just downloaded and installed!!!
Thanks to anyone who is involved – bringing blender forward !!!

  25. 25 MmAaXx

    fantastic!

    thankyou guys!

  26. 26 MortalHuman

Nice! Still learning, hadn't found any bugs on my own, but upgrading just to avoid them :P

Thanks a lot for the heads up :D

  27. 27 Meta Androcto

    Great Work!
Its the little things that make this build important.
All the bug fixes better prepare 2.49 series for short to mid term production work.
It gives users something nice & stable to work with whilst we Explore & wait for 2.50.
    Many Thanks to the devs.

  28. 28 sympodius

You know, I think this is the first time I've had a version of Blender that was over ten megabytes to download.

  29. 29 Ucupumar

    Be patient…
2.49z will be the latest version before 2.5

  30. 30 Robo3Dguy

    Thanks guys!

  31. 31 indiworks

There are some nice new (hidden) features in this "bugfix" release for the VSE: Speed Control fixed/now works both ways (as you'd always wanted it…) and "EDL importer for the sequencer (…) Example import from final cut pro…" (!) This all sounds quite significant to me…

  32. 32 ralmon

Hmm. Change of heart. I'll download b. Gota see for myself.

  33. 33 ROUBAL

Well… I'd prefer not having to say that, but after some tests, the particles system that had some bugs in 2.48a and some features broken by 2.49a is worse again in 2.49b.

A blend file perfectly rendering particles objects in 2.48a doesn't render these particles in 2.49a and 2.49b.

I'm working for months on my 4×4 Autodrive system, and I will release the "official version "including the Tracks Creator in a close future, but you will have to use it with 2.48a, because 3 bad bugs in the particles system.

  34. 34 John R. Nyquist

It's great the Blender developers are keeping on top of the bugs. Stability is my #1 favorite feature of software I use professionally.
