I've looked at it, and I must say this is the most elegant and simple way to do it that I've ever seen. Great work Ben!

@Olaf - should be possible. The smoke would be the tricky part, but Blender is getting a smoke simulator. :) There is also the issue of heat haze, but that can be done with some compositing.

A lot can be changed with this effect by altering the scale of the textures and the speed of the moving empties. For a rocket exhaust starting point, you probably want large scale textures (ie less turbulence) and faster empties. Be sure to post your results in the forum thread if you want!

I wonder if this same technique could be altered to simulate the exhaust of a rocket engine. Any idea?

@broken_sword : as Blender v2.49a allows video textures in the Game Engine, I think that you can get this kind of visual effect !

Raked & Flamed! NASCAR can do no better! Why is it easier to download from
BlenderArtists than from Vimeo?

@Ben: Kudos, that effect is brilliant :) I shudder to think what will happen when you have the force of Brecht, Campbell, Ton and of course Blender 2.5 behind you!

And the effect is so easy too! I got no-at-all-shabby results in about 10 minutes of my own experimentation with your technique.

If I wore a hat it would be off right now.
