I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Community Lead at n8n.
I like the fact that these demoreels have recently really gotten very professional. Few years ago Blender was something that was not at all on par with other programs. It seems to me that this has changed.
I suspect that it started with Elephants Dream and has gradually gained momentum.

@irve I completely agree; the quality of the demo reals being produced has improved greatly over the years. It probably has a lot to do with Elephant Dreams setting a benchmark.
I love blender but I am going to throw out something here–a lot of people say blender is on par with other 3D applications out there–for a good chunk of it, it is. But there are a lot of things it needs to catch up in. I wont go into too much detail here, but to sum it up: All these projects (ex: Orange, Peach and now Durian) are what’s going to get it there and the support from us the community.
Remember, blender may be free to download–but it isn’t free to develop. ;-)

How people achieve these results using Blender is probably a different story.
Hey guys thank you very much for your kind words in behalf of Licuadora Studio and myself :D. As to answer a couple questions, the render engine we used for everything in the demoreel in Blender Internal.
Camera tracking on shots from “Superagentes” movie was done in Voodoo Tracker and then exported to Blender. BTW that movie was premiered at cinemas in Argentina and it’s available in DVD now, so regardless what people might think about the movie itself, it contains full Blender made shots in film :))
Some people have noticed a few shots inspired on “El Eternauta”. Although there is indeed a movie project going on about it (yay !!) we are not related to such production and these were mere tests carried out in our “secret lab” ;)
