Vote for the Suzanne Awards TODAY
Today’s the last day for voting for the Suzanne Awards 2012.
Ton Roosendaal writes:This year we need your help to select the best submissions for the annual Suzanne Awards. Out of the 126 entries, we need 5 nominations for each of the three awards – Best Short, Best Design and Best Animation.
Voting is anonymous, no login is required.
The votes will be registered by Jarred De Beer and Ton Roosendaal. They will check if the voting happened in a fair manner (like flatten out strange peaks of votes that happen at one moment), and they will verify the ranking with the judges committee; the Suzanne Award winners of 2011. The judges will have the right to add a wildcard nomination for each categery – in case they consider an entry to be undervalued.Saturday 13 october, the visitors at the Blender Conference will vote for the winners.
Online voting ends October 8, 1700 UTC.

Yeah, I actually hope they postpone the voting deadline. If people saw this just today they must have time to do a fair vote.
Even on Blender.org they announced it on October 6, that’s 2 days before deadline.
PLEASE: Randomize exposure to entries and restart voting.
It’s a beautifully designed site visually but it functions poorly and unfairly as a nomination site.
Currently, most people will only have time to watch a few; they’ll click “VOTE” and start from the beginning. So the first few entries will get most of the exposure and get enough views to be judged fairly, but the later videos will receive few to no views.
Or if they click the “ENTRIES” button they will start from the back, and the entries that happen to have enticing thumbnails will be viewed more. (For example: a woman’s legs and crotch.) instead of each entry having a fair chance of being viewed.
Also, because voting pages have direct links, it allows people to self-promote. It becomes a contest of who has more Facebook friends willing to help instead of being judged on merit.
So please:
Just show a random entry and accept a score, then allow the voter to see another random entry if they want to keep voting. Remove direct links and the thumbnail page links to entries.
(Disclaimer: I did not enter into this contest or past Suzanne contests and have no other motivation than wanting the contest to be fair.)
I also sent this to the site creator’s using the contact form. Perhaps I should have done that first. I certainly don’t wish any disrespect.
But I also hope for wider awareness of this problem. Too often I see contests intended to judge items on merit become a popularity contest, and/or many items do not get a fair chance because they were not one of the first or last to enter.
I believe the solution is simple: give every item a random chance of being viewed and don’t allow direct links to entries. Discussion?
