CFD Simulation of Car/Caravan Combination
Scientific visualisation of some ‘computation fluid dynamics’ data.
Henry Pang writes:This is a CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) simulation of a car/caravan combination using a DES modelling technique conducted by the CFD Consultancy, TotalSim. The movie was rendered in Blender 2.63 and is shown with the kind permission of Swift Group Ltd.
The movie contains approximately 600 frames and shows approximately 2 seconds worth of flow data. These 2 seconds took over more than 8000 core-hours to calculate using the open source CFD solver OpenFOAM.
That’s amazing. How do OpenFOAM’s simulations compare with wind tunnel tests? Just curious — I worked for Boeing.

don’t know really, but about source code i got 6 months ago, they used finite elements technic well knows to be the best for real simulation.
of course it is hard to get promising results in such high Re number simulation comparing with wind tunnel tests.
That’s a challenging problem for CFD people.
Yeah, it’s very close to reality as the cylinder test shows. Well defined Carman’s paths proves it. My favorite video is the last from the playlist. It’s clear here that the trailer is not so well designed at the back. But the front side is good.
I suppose that the video with a snow rider is wrong because there is no any movement of his clothes.
So this is what Ghost Rider looks like when he’s middle aged and on vacation with his kids.
