3D Printing Event – Adelaide AUS, 20th Feb 2012
A free mini-conference on 3D printing Down Under. Our own Ben Dansie will give a presentation as well. The afternoon workshop is already full, so if you want to attend, you’d better hurry!
Ben Dansie writes:3D Printing Forum: The Next Industrial Revolution? – Monday 20 February 2012, Adelaide, SA.
Morning Forum (9am until 1pm)
Speakers from industry, education, research and the creative communities will present on a broad range of topics, from how they are using 3D printers in their work, through to the impact that these technologies are beginning to have on diverse fields including clothes and footwear design, architecture, engineering and construction, automotive, aerospace, and the medical industries. During the break, participants will get a chance to see 3D printers in action.Speakers include:
- Dr Genevieve Bell (Intel)
- Gavin Artz (ANAT)
- Researchers from the University of South Australia
- Other speakers to be confirmed.
Afternoon Technical Workshop (2pm to 4pm)
A limited number of participants will learn about the technologies involved in more detail, from the basics of 3D design through to the science behind 3D printing. articipants will get the chance to try out some of the technologies involved themselves.I know there isn’t a lot of notice, but it should make for a very interesting day. I’ll be assisting in a presentation of various software available to artists and designers that aren’t the usual CAD options – thus mentioning / demonstrating Blender.

*sigh* You move out of Adelaide thinking that nothing cool is ever going to happen there… and then learn about Mfoxxdog and Ben Dansie and stuff like this happening there… Someone needs to give Rising Sun Pictures a good Blender demonstration and a nudge. I nominate Ben, if he hasn’t already! ;)

Quick question though – having already made myself very familiar with the 3D printing process (having a whole bunch of models Ive made myself printed already), is it worth attending the afternoon session? It seems to sounds like its focused more as an intro for beginners? It would be cool to see a 3D printer working in person though…
This article also seems to suggest that the arvo session is full already, but it looks like you can still register for it. Either way, I may just come for the talk in the morning & networking opportunities (with a box of recent shapeways prints to show off) ;)

I’m not too closely involved with the overall organisation of the day, but I checked when submitting the story and the afternoon session was booked out on the site. At the time of posting this reply it indeed does look like there are spots again. A few cancellations perhaps?
To be honest, you personally probably won’t learn much from the Monekystack presentation, but we are only doing half an hour of the afternoon session so the other sessions might interest you. I’d give more details if I knew them. There will be printers in action though as mentioned.
The plan as I understand it is to finish the official program by 4pm and then leave the rest of the day open for networking, sharing and the like.

up in South Australia, I was always treated like a retarded nuisance for having
an interest in 3D modeling, so this is really upsetting to see how quickly this
part of the world sings a different tune all of a sudden, likely because now
there’s some local money involved somehow.
Australians suck.
Growing up in South Australia Ive had nothing but motivation and encouragement when it comes to 3D work of any type. So, I cannot relate.
