Sintel: Score Now Available, Music Video
Jan Morgenstern has just published the complete score of Sintel as a mini-album. You can download ALL the music including the credit song in MP3 and lossles FLAC format. As a bonus, he worked with Colin Levy on a videoclip of ‘I Move On’ AND he published the sheet music for ‘I Move On’ as well. Good job!
Jan Morgenstern writes:Hey folks! Jan here. It has taken me a bit longer than expected, but I finally got everything together for the traditional mini-album release of the film score. This time, the bundle even contains a few additional goodies, which I really hope you’ll like.
Please take note that this version of the music is published onder a CC-BY-NC-ND (no commercial, no derivatives) license, which is a bit stricter than the movie’s license: CC-BY.

I agree. No commercial is one thing that I can understand but no derivatives is *very* restrictive as it violates the essence of open source and open content ideals.

According to a friend that happens to be a lawyer student…
No comercial: You can’t sell this.
No derivates: You can’t modify this: Used mostly to prevent someone modify in part or the whole song and sell it (it happens more frecuently than you might think).
Pretty reasonable, IMHO, from the author viewpoint. If you want to use the score in a youtube AMV, or for some non-comercial purpose, is OK as long proper attribution is recognized. Depending on your location, use parts of it for non-commercial uses, is OK also, since is the song, not another song “derivated” from it.
In the end, the only purpose of a no derivate clausule is to prevent commercial usage of the songs without permission. Nothing more, nothing less.

Beautiful song and soundtrack. The first time I heard it I supposed it was an external song added to the movie, didn’t imagine it was composed for Sintel. The whole sountrack is impressive, deep and very emotional, adds a lot to the movie. And the video is very nicely done.
Jan’s growing is very evident in this work.
As for the license, maybe if we were in a music community I would care more for it being released allowing changes, I guess I care more about 3D, and seeing how much music added to Sintel is enough for me.

Well, there’s gonna be dubstep or liquid funk remix of the ‘Lament’ tune sooner or later. It’s pretty inevitable.
Excellent lyrics by Esther Wouda en great performance by Helena Fix too. I really believe this song is beautiful and touching in its score, lyrics and performance.

I’m sorry guys, but I must admit, that I don’t like much the cut in the music video. :(
There is too much of senseless fade outs and fade ins into/from black and not many really good timings generally. I think this music deserves more slowed shots (possibly with blended frames), maybe alternated with quicker ones. And more creativity with given shots.
I’m sorry for the criticism, but I had to say it. ;)
Maybe I’ll try to make my own version tonight to show what I mean (and also to prove to myself, that I can really do it, if I can criticise ;)).
The music is definitely a great professional job! No doubts about it. :)

just adding something about the No derivative License issue:
make and/or edit a video adding the song is considered Derivative work so you cannot make your own youtube version even if it’is not with commercial purposes…

So, if I want to have this as the soundtrack to an animation reel I am working on (to get showcase my work to studios) I can’t?
Of if it turns out that I can, but the showreel is a different length to the soundtrack, I can’t use audacity to make my own cut to suit the reel?

Regarding of the licence for the music – I simply asked Jan for permission to publish this video and he had no problem with allowing that, as he write: “as long as the attribution is there”. :)
That really sucks. So has Morgenstern given to the Durian project or taken from it? He gets to use all these great Open Source graphics clips on his music demo video but we don’t get to use his music on our own demo reels. Either I’m missing something big here (I hope so, because I would love the freedom of being able to just use 100% of my preordered DVD when it arrives) or something is very amiss.
I don’t mind having to print accreditation where it’s due, but if I had to ask special permission for the use of what was given to an Open project, it’s really no different to me than a commercial license.
@Lancer AFAIK Morgenster said he will not take actions again people using his music on videos but that’s not the point. The license is No derivative and using it on your own video is a risk.
BTW Sintel’music is still CC and FREE. so you can download it and hear it and share it and enjoy it… which is great :D. I think a No derivative license is more like “I give my music to the world for free, enjoy it …but please don’t ruin it”.
