Assembly 2010 Short Film winners
Two Blender shorts (well, one of them was made ‘mostly’ in Blender’) made 2nd and 3rd place at the Short Film competition at Assembly 2010. Assembly is Finland’s largest computer festival.
The just finished Assembly Summer 2010 demoparty released the results of the Short Film competition. The short film in the third place, called HBC-00009: Space Funk Rock, was mostly made in Blender and the short film in the second place, called What is Love, was fully made in Blender.

Enzio: Everything else is Blender render, except for the gas planet scenes, and the intro to the DJ planet (which were done in Maya).
Congrats to your placing. As for my personal opinion, I find the animation and story very lacking. I stuck around because I don’t want to risk missing a climatic ending. It was a anti climax though. 3 plusses: the camera direction is ok, the lighting is good and you got to love those Amiga/ C64 music. It took me back to yonder days.
The second one is nice. Makes for a good music video or a background loop at Pizza Planet.
These are really nice animations, great job! the song in ” what is love ” goes in really nicely with the animation. does anyone know the name of the song?
“hbc” stuff is adorable as always.
Space Funk Rock looks like it was heavily influenced the Venom’s Lab DVD and “Bounce to Space” by Pablo Vasquez. nice animation!

Render is so neat on the first one that is untrue.
The effect on the second video are next to nothing.

Which make me think that in blender there are very different
world. Amateurs and Professionals
And for people like me who have been using blender for 4 years
now, no matter what resources I buy
(With all the Books Dvds I have in blender I could probably open a blender e shop)
it is very hard to step into that professional looking render/modelling.
Although Blender is open source and all the rest, it does not make
any difference.
That is why I am very happy that guys like Andrew Price and Kernon Dillon exist,#
There don’t just show you the render and say: Hey guys look what I can do!!!
There get they hands durty and show you how to get the Job done.
There really give tips to make your work look like finish professional product.

Both are excellent in using strong ideas, being stylistically tight, and are a joy to watch right through!
The first would make an excellent TV advertisement (if cut for one) and the second could be a music vid on tv.
But both are perfect as they are!

@V1ntage, I have been doing 3D for about 2 years. And the others more or less but none of us have any education on the subject. So we’re not professionals or anything :)

@V1ntage, as for myself (maxon), I’ve been doing 3D from year 2005, which is 5 years. I think it’s pretty much the same for all the 3D-members of our group.
However, this was the first short for me in which I used Blender and Ubuntu.

I liked What is Love by Pistoke especially for the story but Space Funk Rock by ½-bit Cheese is really jaw-dropping! Fantstic imagination and effects!
