Making of “A Very Little Warrior” short film
As a whole, Endre Baráth’s [endi] short movie ‘A Very Little Warrior‘ was well received in March on Blendernation. People felt that the technique was awesome, but that the animation and story could use some more work. He has now published the ‘making of’, so you can now all do better than him ;-)
Finally I finished the “making of” article of my second short film “A Very Little Warrior”. You can read the english and the hungarian versions on my website. (Thank you to Zsolt from blender3d.hu for the english translation!)
I think it is not a common “making of” article and warning: this is not a “step by step” tutorial, and not for beginners (but I hope it will inspire beginners)..

I especially like how you painted over the leaf texture to raise the normal maps. Genius! I’d always wondered how you got the leaves to look so full and fresh. Now I know! Thanks for sharing this information with us Endi!

Impressed by the render times and the one render pass approach!
Questions:
– Is there a light under the ground level? Please explain!
– I didn’t understand the fake reflection/rimlight thing with the angular map.
It would be great to have some more detailed tutorials about the lighting part (for example: screenshots with certain lights turned on and off) and the texturing.

Marcus, the ground light makes the bouncing brown light from the ground.
Try the angular map options in BGE GLSL and you will see it is very easy to use.
The DoF technique is really cool.
I find the compositing section very interesting too.
Lately, it seems like a lot of good-looking blender films all have elaborate, complicated node setups.
Endi’s short is also gorgeous, but the node setups aren’t that elaborate.
He even touches on the theory that managing so many render layers might take longer
than re-rendering certain things, sort of manpower vs. machine power concept.
The most fascinating tutorial I’ve read this year.
