Tonight there’s a free screening of the Academy Award nominated animated feature film ‘The Secret of Kells‘ on the lawn at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens. Parts of this movie have been produced in Blender by the Belgian studio Digital Graphics.

A surprise Oscar nominee for Best Animated Film, THE SECRET OF KELLS follows the adventures of 12-year old Brendan on a dangerous mission to help complete a magical illuminated manuscript. Almost entirely hand-drawn, this dazzling film, made in the iconic style of medieval art, is a gorgeous antidote to the familiar style of today’s digital animation.

Saw this movie and for the most part loved it. Great (2D) visual style. Would love to see a breakdown (hint hint) of the shots done in blender
Saw it recently at a local “dollar” theater. While the visual style was very appealing to my wife and I, neither of us really understood the story and I had to do a bit of searching to get a good breakdown to enlighten me. Even after getting a better idea what the mythological and historical references were from I was still less than thrilled with it overall. Scenes didn’t flow together well and the long build up in the story ends anticlimactically. Perhaps if I had a deeper tie to some cultural / religious roots I might find it more appealing.
there is a dvd, I’ve owned it for some time now, and I really like this movie. I disagree about the anticlimactic ending. I wasn’t really hoping for a hollywood-magic-book-saves-the-day-and drives-the-baddies-away ending.
This is an excelent movie, I saw is a few months ago.
saw this movie in the theater (I paid for it), it was terrific, it’s like watching a moving painting.
got it as a dvd here in France, my kids and I love it . great movie.
