Blender Benchmark: 2.49 vs 2.50 alpha 2
Elephantatech has pitted blender 2.49 and 2.52 alpha 2.50 alpha 2 in a benchmark test. Both render speeds and render quality have significantly improved.
To test how good my desktop was I did a render Benchmark with Blender this past weekend and got some interesting results. The Benchmark was done using blender 2.49 and new alpha 2.52 2.50 alpha 2 both found on the download page at the blender 3D website. I wanted to know what my new PC will tell me about blender and its performance so here is a test.

isn’t it “Blender 2.50 alpha 2” instead of “Blender 2.52 alpha” ????

yes you are right. It should be Blender 2.5.2 as per the http://www.blender.org/development/release-logs/blender-250/ you will see it on the top. Thanks @Olm-Z for pointing that out. I also updated my post with the correct information. It has just become bad habit of forgetting the period between the 5 and 2.
I do not know what it is,
but Blender 2.5 does not grow in me,
I find myself going back to 2.49.
Question for Matt:
Will all the Script in 2.49 will be converted to 2.5?
Script such as the edge to curve available under the mesh script.

amazing speed up with render times alone! great work being done on blender…
btw i think it may be 2.52 because when they release it, it will just be 2.6
I wil be just stoked when 2.5 hits a beta state and has all its features. I’m looking forward to the material library and finally being able to save my own custom GUI. currently not everything saves. colors for example.
For anyone looking at the render times, the difference between 64-bit v. 32-bit is important to mention.
I normally use a 3.0 GHz Core2Quad, running Windows XP 32.
Recently I got to use a 2.4 GHz Xeon Quad, running Windows XP 64.
Initially, I installed 32-bit Blender on the Xeon and the render was about 0.9x as fast (i.e. slower) than the 32-bit machine, as expected for the clock speed. I then installed 64-bit Blender on the Xeon. It then rendered at around 3.5x – 4.5x as fast as my 32-bit PC! So in short, if you have a 64-bit OS then switching to 64-bit Blender can make a huge difference in render times.

As long as the final release doesn’t crash mid render like the current alpha does all is well. I know it’s alpha stage so crashes are to be expected but all the lovely new features work for me but I can’t render more than a few frames at HD resolution before a crash.
(this is a 2.5 issue because I can render til the cows come home on 2.49)
Still, can’t wait for the stable version to come out so I can get to work on my webseries =D
