Ott Planetarium release open movie, announce workshop

Ron Proctor writes:

The Ott Planetarium at Weber State University is pleased to announce the 2010 Blender Production Workshop Schedule. Novice and advanced sessions will be held at Weber State University in June and July, 2010. The 2010 workshops will build on the very successful 2009 season.

In addition, the Ott Planetarium, Audio Visual Imagineering, and Konica Minolta Planetarium Co. are pleased to announce the release of Sizing Up Space, the Mercury Open Movie. Sizing Up Space is a 13 minute planetarium show that explores the scale of the universe in terms of light years. The program was produced by Blender Workshop students at the 2009 Mediaglobe Users Group Conference.

The 2009 season workshops were led by Ott Planetarium’s Production Coordinator, Ron Proctor, and Assistant Planetarium Director, AmyJo Proctor.

“While the Blender Institute’s open movie and open game projects drive the development of Blender software, we are using the open movie concept to develop skills in our students,” said Ron. “The open movie provides a real, unifying project that everyone can be a part of. We’re not just doing exercises from a book, we’re producing something that we can use in the real world.”

The Ott Planetarium, located in Ogden, Utah, has been in operation since 1969. In 2005, the planetarium began producing original fulldome content. Ott Planetarium staff have been conducting Blender-based workshops since 2008.
