I’ve bought the first edition. Really impressive, many thanks to Olivier (but he already knows that)
As a long time Blender user, I still learn a lot from the book as it covers far more features that the ones I’m used to.
It’s also available through the blender.org site (limited quantities I believe), or through amazon.fr. If you don’t mind reading in french, it’s highly useful for things that the “Essential Blender” book only touches upon – i.e. bullet physics, setting up fluid simulations, the game engine, shaders.. Awesome book!
Why didn’t I pay attention in my French classes?
I hope it can be translated to English..
@Ben Turcotte: apparently it is no longer in the e-shop. Everytimes there’s a reprint of the book (or a new edition or whatever -no Joeri, I wasn’t poking you-) the Blender Foundation gets a few totally free copies to sell on its e-shop. Thus, buying these books (when available, of course!) from the BF e-shop is like directly donating to the Fondation! ;-) It’s my way to pay back to the Foundation for all the great job done… ^^
@RedBirdiii: unfortunately there are no plans to translate it into English. There are already many good books in english! Essential Blender introduces to the basics, but is really good anyway…
Some times ago I was talking about the problems inerrant to a frequently updated software like Blender, notably concerning learning books…
I bought the first edition of “La 3D libre avec Blender” not so long ago, haven’t finished it yet because heavily loaded with work, and now I feel a bit f*cked seeing this second, more up to date, edition coming out.
The basics remain the same and the book is still very good of course but now I feel like missing information…
Anyway, I probably won’t buy a complete book only for a few pages covering the (important) changes between 2.42 and 2.44, but I would have jumped on a low-cost “add-on” booklet.
Maybe a (paying) downloadable pdf of the update would be a possibility ?

@Baboule: Unfortunately it seems that there’s no pdf on the horizon sight… :-( Moreover, it’s not like if a few pages have been pluged here and there (which would be easy to edit as PDF files), but whole sections, large parts of chapters or only lonely paragraphs have been totally rewritten, and these rewrite jobs are scattered within the book, so that it matches perfectly with the latest version of Blender. Extracting and collecting these individual changes into a PDF will produce something not easy to read or not so useful out of its context. True that an electronic version would have been welcomed, but it would have been possible only if material has been added, instead of updated. Difficult topic, indeed!
