Short Film: Wake up in Cannes

Dolph Kawalec writes:

The Magic Shop recently used Blender to help produce a short film that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. It was all for a promotion by HP intended to “Reinvent New Frontiers.” 30 teams pitched ideas for a short featuring (and edited on) HP workstations and computers.

Our team was one of 4 teams selected to film a short — half in our home town of Winston Salem, NC and the other half in Cannes, France. It was screened and judged at the HP Pavilion. Our concept involved extruding photographs in 3D and printing them so a visually impaired woman could relive her past.

I prepared depth maps of the photographs in Photoshop, but for the filming of the actor’s on-screen manipulation, I used Blender to bring it to life in full color. Special thanks to Out Of Our Minds Animation Studios for the 3D printing.

The project was produced and edited in a total of 4 days. It was an amazing effort for the team.

    • Thanks, LEOCESAR!
It really depended on the photo, but basically I blocked out 8 to 10 height levels in Photoshop by just drawing basic shapes over the image in different levels of grey. from there I played around with levels (adjustment layer) and blending styles on the master image layer to bring in some of the detail, roughly staying within the greyscale range that was designated by the shape it was a detail of.
Not the best way, I know. But given the amount of time to prep the files, it definitely worked with the schedule I was given.
