The Martian - Portrait

Hi BlenderNation,

My name is Todor (or ToshiCG) and I recently finished this image that I called "The Martian - Departure". It began as a likeness study of Matt Damon and gradually developed into this final image. I am relatively new to Blender but I used Blender almost exclusively for this project and I was very happy with the uninterrupted workflow that this 3d suit allows for.

You can see my WIP thread on Blender Artists here (thanks to everyone who critiqued my work there).

You can also see the final image in the Finished Projects forum.

Critiques and ideas are welcome! Cheers.

    • Hey Russel, thanks and I wish you luck with your portrait project in the future! Faces are complex so it will probably take more then one try. My advice is to learn as much about anatomy as you can, to observe and do a lot of studies.

  1. This is getting scary lix the wax museum.
How can we now tell something is CG is real, you surely raised the bar here, amazingly life like.
Did you use the new microdisplacement options as in blender latest build branch ?.

    • Thanks PGTART. I actually think there is a lot for me to learn and improve but if you feel that way then I'll take as encouragement!
I did not use microdisplacement although it's a feature I look forward to when it's stable. For now a good normals or bump map does a pretty decent job for skin detail .

  2. sculpture is near perfect, but face shading don't look convicing... in area of eyes is fine but in lower parts of image, especially mouth or bottom nose, mesh looks like candle not skin :(
anyway, this is great piece of art and imo most strongest aspect of this image is face expression

    • Thanks B2PRZEMO!
I agree with you. Wax and skin are surprisingly similar so a little difference in values and you're off to wax-land. :) I'll work on that.
