New compositor features

11

At the last Blender Conference, Sean Kennedy left his 'wish list' for compositor improvements. Less than four months later, Sergey has almost completed them.

These new features are of course great, but the bigger story for me is once again the power of this community: how helpful people are for each other and how passionate both artists and developers are about Blender. Very inspiring indeed.

At the Blender Conference in Amsterdam in October, 2015, I brought a small list of what I hoped were easy things that could be improved in the compositor. Sergey Sharybin jumped on it almost immediately, and as usual, rocked it! Here's a short video demo of a few of those improvements.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Those are the kind of changes Blender falls behind to it's great features a lot - attention to some particular seemingly small details. Features make it possible, details make it feasible. Unfortunately only users with lots of experience (and not even all of them) know which details are critical and you can't tell that by a person's comment or request. Great to see the progress.

  2. Thank you Sergey! This sort of customer service is so incredible it shames the entire Adobe corporation.
Now we just need the ability to reorder objects in the Dope Sheet editor, not just channels... ;-)

  3. Your contribution to the Blender Development is most appreciated. Your responsiveness to clearly outlined areas of need in a relatively short time frame is most remarkable. Well done, Sergey, and the Blender Development team.
