Behind the Scenes: Old Tavern

6

See how Gregory Langeix created his 'Old Tavern' scene which he entirely hand-painted inside Blender.

My name is Gregory Langeix, I am a graphic designer / Webdesigner for a French IT e-commerce site. In my professional work, I try to breathe life into my creations, create worlds and rich environments. But Webdesign is Webdesign, and I can’t express myself like I want. Especially with flat design :-).

After several years, I decided to breathe and (re) start the drawing. I’m not an illustrator and 3D is a way to express myself more easily. To be quite frank, I started using Blender only two months ago (I already had some experience in 3D graphics), and I became totally fascinated by being able to paint directly on my 3D object, thanks Blender. So I fed myself with tutorials and I trained first by creating small objects, and then by larger objects, to finish with this idea of a tavern. This project was done in 2 weeks.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Painting like this directly on the model has always been a challenge for me in Blender. While I mostly paint 2D characters, I could never achieve a stylized or closely realistic results like this with Blender's brushes. Good job on this entire scene. Do you think you could ever make a video showing your process of painting in Blender using your workflow?

    • Hello Kris

Thank you so much ! I already made a video about this painting. All the painting process is not on the video but you can see most of the work here (look at 3min) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkwDKNuJmz4&feature=youtu.be
This is the 4th part of the playlist.

Blender offering simple and easy to use tools for painting with a great feeling & processus. I used the simple brush for all the scene and a 4096*4096 texture.

You can watch me live in Twitch (link in the article), i'll paint soon for my next project.

      • Thanks for the reply and the video. You're very talented, and you show good patience working in Blender paint. Thanks again and look forward to your next project!

        • Thanks :) I'm working on an animated flying galleon, wich is a big project... I hope to finish it for the end of this month, or march maybe. You'll see it in Sketchfab :) (sorry for my poor english...)
