KRUM - Edge Of Darkness is now live on Steam!

Orlin Doutskinov's hack and slash RPG game KRUM was fully produced in Blender and runs in the BGE. It's now available on Steam!

Orlin writes:

I am happy to announce that KRUM - Edge Of Darkness, a fully Blender made game is finally released on Steam.

It took me almost 8 years of development using Blender and Blender GE to deliver this game. No matter what will happen later, I just want to say that I'm proud of it and that this release proves once more, that Blender GE is actually a fully functional game engine, capable of making advanced video games.

About the game

It is a fun, hack and slash RPG game, аn action adventure with advanced combat tactics. You will face countless fearsome mobs and grotesque beasts, hidden deadly traps, powerful demon knights and dragons.

    • 2º, first - I Will Escape. we would have much more games, by investing at GE. Especially update (OpenGL) to a more current and work better performance (speed) in GE.

  1. I bought the game , because as Aleration xc says in his play through, it's not super easy like a lot of current games, it definitely has a certain charm too. Looking forward to a challenge playing it!

  2. Francisco Ortiz on

    Kudos to Orlin.
Don't forget that this game was made with Blender 2.49b.
Imagine what the Game Engine community could reach IF the Blender Foundation dedicate more attention to our beloved Game Engine.

  3. Congratulations to Developer, a large part of players miss it. Many games today is based simulator, and dynamic present in this game, just forgotten. Why producers INDIE, will always have an audience.

  4. I really liked the effect the haze has on terrain in the background. From a distance a lot of the scenery had a painterly look that was really pretty.

  5. Sincerly I don't think I'll play it because I've quited gaming a few years ago to save time but...

Man this is amazing, I also felt so nostalgic and it does look so nice... And I feel do admirative. 8 years of indie work is just mad, I don't know where you've found the courage to reach this but I really wanted to let you know how incredible it is.

This art, I don 't know any one that has worked so long on a dingle project. Big respect

BTW, the intro menu looks like the campaign menu of warcraft 3. Amazing!

  6. Ok, I've heard many "wow"-s here, so it's time to bring some balance to the topic. So...

I can't judge the gameplay, because, well, I haven't played it yet. But from technical point of view this game is like 10 years outdated, instantly bringing to mind games like Gothic 1 (or 2 at best). It definately doesn't show the "power" of BGE. I'd say just the opposite - it shows how weak this engine is. Level of details is like 2000-2005, with blurry textures, very simple models, no advance lighting techniques, very simplistic physics and no advance environment destruction. This kind of game could be done on 15 years old idTech 3 engine, which is not a good recommendation for BGE.

And yes, I know, someone say: "Hey, but it's indie, it's because of lack of resources!".

Well... no. Just look at the other game, Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Done by small indie studio, without big budget, within around 3 years (more than 2 times less than KRUM):

And yes, these are actual screenshots from the game, not some pre made bullshots.

The difference betwean KRUM and VoEC? VoEC was made using Unreal Engine 3 (and then ported to UE4).

The bottom line is: sorry, maybe this game has great gameplay (I don't know), but it definately doesn't show ANY real potential in BGE, it rather shows how weak BGE is compared to (very accessible and not demanding any initial fee) it's commercial competitors.

    • "within around 3 years (more than 2 times less than KRUM)". Well, to be fair the small indie team are 3 people working fulltime in their game. Haidme is alone and I think it is not its main job (partial time).

      • Well, ok, but my point is: this particular game doesn't show any real strenght in BGE. No matter how it was made, it just doesn't show anything that can lead to statemen: "Wow, now you all see what BGE is capable of".

        • The game is not meant to show strengths of BGE. Its just an inde game made by one person in its spare time, that proves BGE is a capable engine, nothing more or fancy about that.

    • Francisco Ortiz on

The core tech of Ethan Carter is Agisoft's "Photoscan"; It's proprietary software. The gameplay has nothing to be with Krum. The Ethan Carter's team is formed by eight people.
You are not being fair here, Tene.

  7. I started recently to play this game, and I liked it! I'm not a big fan about this genre, nonetheless this is a great effort and as far as I've played I certainly enjoyed it, the game atmosphere looks cool among other aspects.

We all (bge lovers) should have the courage to stick to our projects like you did Orlin, congrats!

    • Thanks a bunch!
BGE is in my heart and if I have luck with this game and can go full day working on it, I'll make a sequel. And this time the sequel will show what blender ge is capable of. You will be amazed...I promise. ;)
