Blender and Science: a list of cool addons

2

The TimeFireVR blog lists a bunch of 'scientific' addons for Blender.

Over a year ago we made the decision to use Blender as our primary 3D modeling and animation tool, you can read more about that here.

Today I’ll go over some of the other factors that influenced this choice. First and foremost the software is free. It also has the support of both Epic and Valve (important if you are a game/VR developer). Finally, it is very well positioned for use in scientific visualization. And it is here that things can get into the weeds but are also very exciting for the scientifically inclined.

I have found over a dozen addons that extend and facilitate using Blender in some highly technical ways, as though 3D software wasn’t difficult enough. An “addon” for Blender can also be seen as a plugin, a 3rd party application that hooks into the host software to deliver greater capability.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. WooooooW... i never knew Sverchok Add-on, this is what i wanted for Blender for a long time, i'm coming from Grasshopper + Rhino. Thank you so much.

  2. how about some tool for engineers.. or planing engineers.
you may know Relux / Dialux.. we use them everyday to have the light intensity maps of the rooms to be build and supplied with the lamps of Trilux, Siteco, erco and so on.. all those luminary producers provide IES files of their lamps.
We put thos IES files into a room geometry and measure if we get the 500 lux on the desktop of an office.

Dialux/Relux are not open (free but not open), and it takes years to see them improve.. for Blender and Python this is probably a too easy game to catch the interest of the community..
But I would like it soo much..

    thanks
