Short film: NICHTS

9

Auke Huys's short film 'NICHTS' ("Nothing") is a pleasure to watch. Slow-paced and poetic, the space image and music blender together perfectly.

My name is Auke and I am a German student who studies graphic design. This movie was made for a seminar at school.

I could explain the meaning of this short movie in a thousand words, but the following quote will do it far better:

"To die and to be forced to live, could cause the real death".

But this film is just a little piece of a much larger project. Beside the school, we (friends and me) are developing a video game and the story of the movie is just one part of it. To be more precise every artwork of us will be connected to the game somehow.

Some of the projects are involved in the game and the story, and others are just a recap or "mirror" of the development status. The movie I posted is just a recap.

Blender was used in a lot of ways in this production. All the 3D Stuff you can see was made in Blender. The compositing and effects itself in After Effects.

This is my first real cgi film and I wondered how "strong" the Blender -> AE Bridge is. To be honest, it is very weak compared to Cinema 4D and other applications, but it still fits my needs perfectly.

We animated everything in Blender, rendering it out and exporting the animation data and then sending both to After Effects.

Other stuff like Rotoscoping, PreViz, Shading was also done in Blender, but I think this isn't that important.

Original quote by irene keidel-aparcev: "Sterben und trotzdem weiterleben müssen, kann den wirklichen Tod zur Folge haben."

Music by Chris Köbke.

Here's the film - be sure to turn on the english subtitles!

I'm open for critique and feedback!

  1. This is captivating!

(although I always wonder what's Blender and what's AE, seems like a blurring line...).

Amazing first part (space) and the second part (woman) is good, but (please don't take this the wrong way) I am somewhat confused by the visual style switch from around 3:55 onward. Was that intentional?
It seems 'out of sync', even compared to the first part of the film with the woman.

Nonetheless, I was truly intrigued and am looking forward to more.

    • Hi Taurelius,
      thanks for your kind words.

Its true.It is "out of sync", because her world collapsed. In the first scene the woman died and she took a long journey to reach finally the immortality in some kind of nirwana. Its seems to be nice, but at the breaking point she realise - no. It isnt that nice. She lost one of her most important prerogative.
The right to die, whenever she wants it. Even it is her brightest wish, it isnt possible.
She will be forever in space - in the dark NICHTS ("NOTHING").

  2. Incredible.

I had teh idea of to do some kind of video like this on my mind last week. I loved the music and atmosphere.

I wonder what about to use composing abilities of blender itself?. Can´t you do the things that you did in after inside of blender?. that is something that i always has been wonder.

    Congratulations reallyyyyyy nice work.

    • Hi Uno,
      thanks for your kind words.
The compositing itself would be possible in Blender. To be honest, to composite the single render layers would be far easier in Blender than in After Effects. The node system is just a strong feature.
BUT in Blender I cant do such great effects like the lens flare, simple but effective volumes etc.

To do this in Blender would be a pain.

Know your tools and choose the quickest way. You want to make art - the technical part is just your friend and enemy at the same time.
