I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

So this tutorial was performed in Blender 2.71. 2.75 on both the plank addon used in the article/video and the updated version liked by the blog post there are some problems. Under the modifiers tab the only editable option is bevel.
Michel's comment solved the modifier "issue" for me. My creating an attribute node and using "Col" you'll get the same vertex color effect. Let me know if you have any more problems.
You're in for a real treat. Message me at my username at gmail if you ever have questions or need pointers. It can be intimidating but it is so worth your while!
The newest versions of the add-on have the options grouped in tab that appears in the tootlbaar section of the 3d-view (if not visible, press CTRL-T) because many users found it confusion having the options in the modifiers (even though the add-on behaves like a modifier).
Right click the link and click save. It will save a .py file. Go to blender, addons, install from file and select the .py script. You'll need to activate it with the checkbox.
Something else that might help is a set of node groups I made for this purpose found here: http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/77019 It is similar to the stackexchange post but has everything set up already. You'll have to look at the bottom of the documentation to see how to use it with the floor board generator.
i cant install the addon, i've downloaded the file, zipped and tried to install from user preferences/addons/install from a file... but nothing happen after that. there's no any addon.. plz help!
sure, the problem is, after i install from a file, i want to activate it checking the box, but i cant find the addon, i've tried searching everywhere but i can't find any floorgenerator or planks or something related. i'm running it on win7 64bits intel core i5.
thnx for ur time!
If you are in object mode and use shift+a and go to Mesh do you have the option at the bottom of that list to "add floor board mesh" once you have the plug in installed and the box for activation checked?
By the way, you mentioned that you downloaded it and zipped it. That should work but is unnecessary because it is a single file called 'planks.py' . If you install it from file you can simply point to the .py file or you can move the .py file directly to the addons directory in Blender yourself.

Anyone else having this issue?
Yup, I have the issue where the modifiers tab is missing things and later on the node editor is also missing the vertex color node

Oh yeah thanks, that helped, I thought the name portion in nodes didn't affect the actual node, I'm very new to blender so thank you for helping!

Hi Fabio,
did you tick the checkbox after installing the plugin? Just installiing a plugin in Blender is not enough: you have to enable it as well.

Once installed it should be in the 'Add Mesh' section of the addons.
