Weekend Contest: Awesome 3D Animated Films

25

Joas won the last weekend contest with his image ‘Moment of Truth’. He selected ‘Awesome 3D Animated Films’ as our new topic.

Joas writes:

I think it is safe to say that - at least for many of us Blenderheads - 3D animated films are a great source of inspiration. For me, Pixar is one of the most fascinating animation studios, because they have produced so many wonderful films and stunning shorts: WALL·E, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Day & Night, The Blue Umbrella… just to name a few.

For this Weekend Contest, pick any 3D animated film (or short) and try to recreate your favorite character or scene. Of course, feel free to invent an alternative scene :)

Rules:

  • Post your work below (attach an image and a screenshot if you like).
  • Post only new work, not existing.
  • Vote for your winner by Monday.
  • Be sure you’re logged in to Disqus when voting, anonymous votes will be discarded!
  • The winner will get a post next week, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

Have an awesome weekend!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Maybe i'm not the best to give advice (hell, i would need it too), but to me this seems to have a flat light and an unmatching background. The first problem removes the attention from the character (the eye is guided towards the fireball), while the background makes it feel "out of its environment".

      • I'm a firm believer that lighting is the single most important thing in producing a quality result. Perhaps experimenting with ambient occlusion and a sun lamp would help. I also agree with Giovanni in saying that he looks out of his environment; adding a more dynamic background or even just making it lighter/whiter could make a huge difference. I like the fire effect. Good luck!

  1. I hope you recognize him :D

In case you didn't, he should be Toothless from "How to Train Your Dragon". Unfortunately it's only 256 samples, so it's a bit noisy. Tomorrow i'll be away from my pc all day, so maybe i'll start a rendering at 2048 samples and hope there are no black-outs :P

It's only a few months i'm trying to do some CG and this was my first try at the Sculpting Mode in blender (and clay sculpting in general), so tell me wathever i did wrong/right, so i can remember it for later use :P

  3. "Circle of Blender" I love the lion King! I had alot of fun making this, for the sun rays I layered a bunch of box masks in the compositor and masked out Raiki (that is the buffoon) to achieve a decent effect. Enjoy! comments/critiques appreciated!

  4. Dragon Shiryu by Sant Seiya

I did in blender and renderized with Mitsuba Render and the composition in the blackmagic Fusion 7.5

Hello everyone, my favorite animated movie is probably Wall-E but since there was already one when i saw the contest i did M.O the cleaner robot that follows Waell-E cleaning up all the mess aboard the Axiom.

    Cheers!

  8. I do hereby proclaim this entry to be called "What's up?"
I only had 20 minutes this weekend to do this; that being said I'm fairly content with the final product. It goes without saying that my materials and modeling could have been improved (transparent balloons) and my lighting a little more dynamic, but hey.
    Bonne chance !

  9. Sooo... will we have any other contests, since this one still didn't get to an end? I'm starting to think that i made such a horrible thing, that you don't want to see anything like that for the rest of your life :P
