8

With the new ‘Cineveo’ VR Movie Theater for the Oculus Rift, you can watch movies in VR. Like Big Buck Bunny!

Cineveo is a virtual reality movie theater for the Oculus Rift DK1 and DK2 that allows users to watch existing 2D and 3D media. The software has been recently updated to version 0.9.5 which adds a much desired file browser, support for the latest Oculus SDK, and several other tweaks.Cineveo immerses users in selection of virtual reality movie theaters, allowing existing 2D and 3D content to be viewed on a huge virtual screen. Prior to the latest update, each theater was limited to four movies which had to be dropped into the appropriate folder beforehand.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Boy there is no love for Sintel or Tears of Steel. Samsung or Sony must included this on their promo disk because the video shop in my local mall here in Namibia often plays BBB it brings a smile to my face every time I walk past that shop to see this play on so many screens.

It's nice to see that the appeal of this short still continues only Caminandes has come close to having the same level of appeal.

    • I'm not trying to start anything and I love Blender Foundation so don't take it that I'm slamming them when i'm not, but BBB has by far the most widespread appeal of all the open movies. All of the other ones are tailored to an intellectual/European audience. Pixar switches it's movies back and forth between appealing and intellectual.. Wall-e intellectual... Toy Story appeal .... ratatouille intelectual.... etc. Unfortunately all of the open movies have been obscure and intellectual instead of just plain funny and fun save one.

  2. William Armstrong on

My guess is that it is considered more family friendly, thus easier to distribute as a test scene. Plus, a big huggable rabbit.

  3. I was actually just thinking that project gooseberry should do a Oculus Rift version on it release. It could be the very first optimized for oculus rift on it's release. Could hit a larger segment of the market that way
