3

Ton Roosendaal just published an extensive report on Blender's presence at Siggraph - the list of news and new opportunities is amazing!

Blender Foundation/Institute has been present at this year’s Siggraph again. In beautiful Vancouver we’ve catched up with many old friends, industry relations and made a lot of new connections.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. "Blender is the first of the 3d tools offering GPU OpenSubdiv in a release"
Wait a minute... so maya, Houdini and 3ds max all use CPU only based opensubdiv?

    Can`t wait for it :)

    • Yeah, this I don't get it, maybe someone can explain to me. Because if you search for opensubdiv on youtube, you get Autodesk presentations from 2012 which show opensubdiv working on maya and mudbox. Maybe those were CPU only and two years later they still haven't make it work on GPU?

  2. Excellent report, Ton :) I am so happy about Blender's current growth and excited about it's future.
Blender is a massive and essential part of my life (~10 hours a day, everyday), residing very close to my heart forever.
    Lots of love and respect.
