I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Extend edge is extremely useful when trying to merge a vertex with an edge, a very common task that required several clicks (subdividing the edge or using the knife tool). Now you can just select the closest vertex of the edge, press ALT-D and snap the new generated vertex to the merging one, remove doubles and there you are! Great!

  2. Using the stairs as an example was probably not the best way to show the Extend edge tool. You could have done the same by extruding from one vertex all the way around. and that takes even less work.

I suppose with a little python knowledge you could create a script that would lock the cursor to the position of an empty or some other "selectable" object.

I wish I could "undo" a cursor move. I love that I can set it precisely in the properties shelf, but I still occasionally move it by mistake and don't always know what its exact position was

The enhanced 3D cursor addon does that for you among other things. It also allows to snap the cursor to meshes.

Yeah, I actually use shift + S all the time. The 3d cursor is one of my favorite modelling tools, and I think this addon will make it easier to control. I can't imagine why I've never seen it on any of the "Most Useful Addons" posts.

  3. i do love your voice thomas, specially your accent ^_^... but must say you forgot to activate the show keys option so we can see what you press to do what you do... like everybody love every new option you show us and thank u for taking your precious time to make this video that helps us to use in a better way blender.

  4. I use the rendered view in the viewport all the time to fine-tune toon shading and such, I will be very happy when it gets (even) faster and easier to use. Even if I am the only one who likes that one best, I still shout "Blender Internal Forever!!!" at random passers-by.

You sound German... do you know a guy called Henning Wehn? Maybe you went to school with him?? (Bad joke, I know, but that dude is funny.)
Good luck with your book launch!

  5. At 9:15 the T and N panels appear next to each other on the left side of the 3D viewport. This always happens for me too! Does anyone know how Thomas corrected this so quickly?
